That's pretty comparable to my boy. He's 18m now and has a few more words

Wheresmycustard · 11/07/2018 16:54

Thanks, that's reassured me. I guess I'm just hearing too much from friends with children similar age who say alot more.

Don’t worry OP, it really varies. My DS couldn’t say nearly as much as that at 16m, he’s now 8yo and doing fine.

Sounds perfect to me. I can’t remember too much from my older two but my youngest was similar, he was two in March and is always chattering.

OfDragonsDeep · 11/07/2018 17:09

That's pretty much where my DS was at that age. He's just under 2.5 now and his language has improved so much between 2 and now. He can talk in sentences now and we can understand pretty much everything he says.

I have a 16 month old too and all he is saying at the moment is 'this' and 'that' when he points at things! No mama or dada or bye or anything else. I have to say I'm also slightly concerned but I'e been reassured that it's nothing to worry about until they're at least 2

8DaysAWeek · 11/07/2018 18:22

My DS turns 2 in a few weeks and he can say:
Daddy
Hiya/hello
Ready, steady, go
Yeah/uh huh
Wow
No
Bubbles

So not a whole lot!! His understanding is amazing and I wonder if I kind of don't help it as most of the time I know what he wants without him having to say it. After he turns two I think I'll speak to the HV about it.

Thanks everyone, very reassuring to hear this is totally normal! 🙂

My dd had less than a handful of words at 16 months. I look back at videos of her when ds was born and realise she was still a baby herself. With both mine though the development between 18 months to two years was astonishing. It was almost like a flick of a switch. They were conversational at 2.

NoNarnas · 11/07/2018 19:21

My DS is 21 Months and says nothing other than sticker.

InDubiousBattle · 11/07/2018 19:24

Totally normal. Ds could only say that many at 2.9, can't shut him up now!

Di11y · 11/07/2018 22:44

If your LO has stopped imitating it might jut be they're focused on some other aspect, e.g. Walking/climbing rather than talking right now. Words often come in spurts.

babyinthacorner · 11/07/2018 22:49

My 18 month old boy has had an explosion of new words and even phrases (mama Car gone! On seeing my car not in the drive!) in the past few weeks.
It happened overnight. Just keep talking at him, it's all going in!

AvtarRamKaur · 11/07/2018 22:49

There's a wide range of normal. If your child is understanding things, obviously working the world out, thinking, experimenting, etc etc. These are important. Speech will come.
