Anyone else about to embark on the longest week of their lives? (ie. potty training the reluctant)

A while ago I decided half term was going to be potty/toilet training DS week. That way I don't have to worry about the school runs, activities we go to etc.

I had visions of sticking him in the garden in pants with a potty nearby and Hey Presto!

Slight problem (or two):

  1. weather forecast looks as if its going to rain all week
  2. DS (2.11) is reluctant (to put it mildy) to sit on the toilet or potty.
  3. DS says it feels nice having a poo in your pants
  4. at the end of day 1 I'm exhausted

Anyone out there going through the same this week?

Its going to be a long old week.........

Gill, we're into week 2 now and DS doesn't always remember about a sticker. In fact I don't think hes asked for one at all today.

He had his first morning at nursery since coming out of nappies today and was dry, no accidents! In fact it seems that although he went and sat on the loo 3 times he didn't actually do anything on it until I turned up. He seems to go for very long spells without a wee sometimes (about 4 hrs today).

Good luck at toddlers angie.

Thanks. She seems to be losing interest in the stickers for wees now. Last night and this morning I asked her if she wanted to put her pink star on the chart and she said 'no, you do it'. However, she is very interested in the gold stars that I got for poos. So I might just do the gold stars now unless she actually asks for a pink one.

Dd had a great day yesterday. She wore the same pair of knickers all day (about 12 hours) with no accidents and even did another poo in the potty. Mum took her out shopping for several hours (with her toilet seat) and she did 2 wees in the toilets in town. I'm so pleased at how well it's going especially as it hasn't even been 2 weeks yet.

Hope it goes well at toddlers angie. I'm sure now your dd has got the hang of it she will realise when she needs to go even if she is busy playing.

had a good day out no accidents although we had 2 in the morn straight after each other although been fine for the rest of the day so dont know what that was all about. DD is starting to get bored with stickers today altough will keep it up until i run out!!

hi i wanted to ask how long you use the potty before moving on to the toliet?? i'm into the 2nd week with DD and is not intersted in the toliet yet any thoughts?

GillL · 08/06/2007 11:10

Great news FourJays!

Dd has done poos in the potty for 4 days in a row now and none in her knickers. She's still having accidents but she's doing really well and even asks to use the potty/toilet before bed when she's got a nappy on.

angie - a book I read said to try after a week or so. I bought a pretty pink toilet seat with Disney characters on it. If you haven't already got one you could try taking her out to choose her own. It might make her more interested.

I think using the potty was were I went wrong - he's over 3 and I think his bum was too big. Seems happier on grown up loo seat - plus with boys their little willes can dangle down then. Potties and toilet seats seem to squash little boys' bits!

Hi everyone
DS is 2.2 and seems to be doing very well . Introduced potty at 23 months (was interested as he has 2 older sisters) and without pushing him made him sit once or twice a day. This week has been to nursery in pants with hardly any accidents. Has never done a poo in potty though, so a bit worried about that. Last night when he got back did a poo in his pants. He usually hides to do one. Any ideas on how to encourage pooing in the potty?

GillL · 08/06/2007 14:20

Hi soiph, have you tried sticker charts. We have pink stars for wees and big gold stars for poos. Even if dd just does a wee she will ask for a gold star. I don't know if it's just coincidence but she only started doing poos on the potty every day when we got the gold stars. Some people also offer a couple of smarties or chocolate buttons if their dcs aren't interested in stickers.

soiph · 08/06/2007 14:34

thanks Gill, I will go and get some stickers. Hope it works

GillL · 08/06/2007 16:54

I've got my fingers crossed for you. Let us know how it goes.

angie0201 · 08/06/2007 18:56

thanks for that, dont wanna rush her to use the toliet if she isn't ready but at the same time dont want her to be on the potty forever

maximummummy · 08/06/2007 22:45

SOIPH - my ds LOVES cars so to get him pooing on the potty we bribed him !!! got a few cars everytime we went to boot sales and stuck them on the mantel so he could see them , it worked and we have hardly any pooey pants now !!!!! have moved on to star charts now with a really good treat at end of week so far so good

angie0201 · 10/06/2007 18:32

first poo and first 3 wees on the toilet i'm so happy she has mastered the potty really well most days not having any accidents but never showed intrest in the toliet, but at last i think we cracked it feel great now!!

soiph · 11/06/2007 10:05

thanks all for you advice. He's had a brilliant weekend. Only two (wet) accidents and 2 poo's in the potty. He loved the animal stickers he got as a reward. The only thing is that he was naked almost all weekend, so not quite sure what would have happened if he was wearing pants! Anyone got an idea, whether leaving them naked is a good strategy? I am just worried that when he is back in pants, he will think they are nappies and start pooing in them again!

GillL · 11/06/2007 11:23

That's great soiph! Not sure what to advise about putting pants on your ds. I guess you should try it and see how it goes. If he's so enthusiastic about the stickers then it might just give him the incentive he needs. Dd didn't do any poos in her knickers after we started with the gold star stickers. In fact, she even asks to do a poo or a wee if she's got a nappy on (first thing in the morning or at bed time).

I'm pleased for you angie. Dd still uses the potty but prefers the toilet now. I think it makes her feel more grown up like she is doing things like mummy and daddy.

Had a great weekend. Dd was clean and dry (except for a couple of drips next to the toilet on one occasion just as I was about to lift her on). I think we may have cracked it. I'm sure we'll still have the odd accident as she often leaves it til the last minute and runs up to me shouting 'need a wee, need a wee'. I can't believe it's only taken 3 weeks.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

GillL · 11/06/2007 11:25

I forgot to add, when dd has done a poo in the potty, she turns round to look at it and then tells me it looks like a chicken!
