20 inch bike too big for a tallish 6yo?

DD1 is 6 and a half, and 118cm and needs a new bike. She's got a 14 inch bike right now, starting to look like Boris Johnson on it at this point. I'd like to see if I could skip the 16 inch one for her altogether and get an 20 inch one now - I was wondering if anyone had done this, and if so what make of bike you got?

We thought about it but due to weight of the 20 we decided not to.

Try a few out and watch the weight - it makes a big difference to how comfortable they feel.

really depends on the saddle height - DD is in reception, on a 16", and could do with moving up; one of her classmates (both are tall - DD is 116cm) is on a 20" one, so there are probably 20" bikes out there that would work for you.. However we have two 16" bikes (don't ask!) with a full 10cm between the lowest saddle height on each. DD can now ride both, but that wasn't the case a year ago!

Thanks for the tip on the weight. And we also have another 16 inch bike! Her twin sister has a 16 inch, which was originally supposed to be DD1's as she was taller but then DD2 learned to ride the 14 inch faster than her sister, so they swapped.

I will take her to the bike shop and see what she looks like on a 20 inch... trouble is we're in Germany where all the kids' bikes have backpedal brakes, so we'll probably end up getting one shipped from the UK.

Get him to stand up next to the bike. The top of the seat when adjusted should reach his the top of his leg in order for him to be able to ride properly (inner leg not hip joint).

Well my DH just had the genius idea of going to France (about an hour's drive) and trying there because they don't have backpedal brakes there either, so hopefully we should be able to get her sorted this weekend Smile
