I've found it a nightmare! It doesn't dissolve properly leaving lumps in the bottle and blocks the teat! FWIW I'm making the bottles up with boiling water and allowing to cool and I still won't dissolve Angry

Cmad116 · 07/07/2018 21:56

Ahh i have two boxes in the cupboard and i make my bottles daily (my baby has room temp bottles) so if they wont dissolve in boiling water what chance do i have :( i dont know if i should just cut my losses and switch to sma or cow and gate when this box runs out. Im worried will it make my baby sick like reports are stating?

It hasn't made my DS sick yet but have a read on Twitter of some of the complaints, there's plenty! I read somewhere that cow and gate is made in the same factory as Aptamil and has a similar formula so could be ok, maybe try a small amount of the C&G pre made and see how you get on?

Oh crap really? I had to buy this today- will start using on Monday, old box just about to run out. My DDs three weeks off 12months, maybe I’ll switch her to whole milk now.

Deehit · 07/07/2018 22:11

We originally started with aptamil and found our baby was constipated. We changed to HIPP organic and never looked back. My friend had the same problem so she did the same

IWantMyHatBack · 07/07/2018 22:16

Cow & Gate is basically the same as old aptimil (same factory), and I haven't heard anything about them changing it.

pastabest · 07/07/2018 22:21

The Aldi own brand stuff is supposed to be the same as old aptamil. Worth a try?

I'm confused about your point about room temp bottles though... surely whatever temp your baby drinks them at you still make them up originally with boiling water?

Cmad116 · 07/07/2018 22:24

How long has your baby had the new aptamil? I bought cow and gate originally when i was in hospital you know the small pre made bottles and she didnt take to it very well but that could be because i was breast feeding aswell?? I had to stop breast feeding after a week as was ill and medication meant i couldn't feed and since then she has had aptamil and been fine... i just feel torn as to what is the best thing to do..

Yes i boil water in kettle leave for half hour then take bottles out of the milton and make up for the day (6 bottles). Then add the powder as and when i need the bottles. I dont have a aldi near me :(

The powder has to hit the boiling water. The point of boiling the water isn't to do anything to the water, it's to sterilise the powder.

If you are making up bottles in advance the current advice is to make them up as per the instructions on the tin (add powder to boiling water) and then rapidly cool them e.g under a cold tap, and then put them to the back of the fridge for the day.

There's no point adding formula to cooled boiled water, you might as well add it to cold water straight from the tap if that's the way you are going to do it.

dinosaurkisses · 07/07/2018 22:40

Adding formula to room temp water won't kill any bacteria that's in the powdered formula, even if the water has been boiled previously. The hotter water also helps the formula dissolve more easily.

I moved DD from Aptamil to C&G at about eight weeks- it was totally fine, she didn't notice any difference! We've actually since moved to the Sainsburys own brand stuff when she was about six months which is £3 per tub cheaper and again, DD has happily swapped.

NapQueen · 07/07/2018 22:42

cmad you need to add the powder at the 30min kettle point too. Flash cool and then refridgerate.

Oswin · 07/07/2018 22:47

Yeah Op you need to do it the way pasta says. I dont blame you for not knowing this though. My health visitor was insistant that i do it like you to save time, and if i made them with boiling water then rapid cooled and put in the fridge, that dd would be very ill.
Luckily i had a family member who is involved in giving the right information about formula feeding, and she told me the health visitor was a knob.

Oswin · 07/07/2018 22:49

I think its a widespread idea that its the water thats the issues and not the powder.

IWantMyHatBack · 07/07/2018 23:34

It's obviously the powder, people are mixing it with boiling water and it's causing problems. It's the consistency and the fact it doesn't dissolve (room temp or boiling water).

Yes, OP, you should make up feeds with boiling water (or near it), but that doesn't seem to be the issue here.

IWantMyHatBack · 07/07/2018 23:35

C&G ready made is very bubbly btw, it's different to the powder formula

Smurfybubbles · 08/07/2018 04:31

I had a feeling it could be down to water quality here as we have really hard water. Either way whatever they have done to heir formula they've fcked up because so many people are having issues now that weren't before!

I tried calling their helpline a few times yesterday to complain but couldn't get through to anyone!

Lana1234 · 08/07/2018 07:45

I’m two tubs into the new one with 10mo DS and I’ve not had problems so far. You definitely have to shake the bottle a lot harder to get it to mix. I’m thinking of changing still as you get 100g less formula than the old one for the same price. Don’t know what they were thinking 😑

MetrioFrappe · 08/07/2018 08:23

I've had trouble with this also. My 4 month old was screaming in pain, waking hungry all through the night & vomiting a lot after drinking the new formula. The powder doesn't dissolve so most of it was going down the sink (actually too clumpy to go down!). I've complained to them & you'd think making bottles with boiling water would be better, they reckon it makes it worse & to wait half an hour until the water is 70° which is ridiculous. Another thing is they say you need to 'hold bottle vertical & shake vigorously for 10 seconds'. AIBU to think this causes air bubbles & would be disastrous in a Dr Browns bottle?
Anyway let's do what we can.

Smurfybubbles · 08/07/2018 10:56

@MetrioFrappe I've signed the petition thanks for the link!

Is 70 degrees hot enough to kill bacteria in the milk? I make mine with boiling water to make sure and I shook vertically for about 10 mins to no effect, even tried swilling as I added the water and rolling the bottle between my hands. It will not dissolve!!!!

Hopefully that petition picks up a bit of steam today and they are forced to take action.

mindutopia · 08/07/2018 11:25

I would just switch to another brand. It’s not ideal to switch quickly but using the new one is already switching quickly so it’s all the same really. With my first, we used cow & gate and it was great. It’s the same really but not so overpriced. A petition really won’t do anything. They are a massive multinational corporation. They care about profits and the change is very likely down to creating profits for even cheaper (hence the reduction in size of the tub). They’ll only really take notice if people stop buying their products. There are lots of other options out there (and without all the marketing gimmicks of aptamil).

MetrioFrappe · 08/07/2018 11:46

@Smurfybubbles thanks! Yes the numbers are going up slowly. I've tried to share it as much as I can. I haven't shared on the actual Aptamil page though, not sure about that one.
Well I think the water has to reach boiling to kill bacteria but then it's the half an hour wait for it to cool to 70°. I have three children & I don't think any of them would ever have been chilled enough to wait that long for their milk!

mundkurm · 08/07/2018 22:47

I bought the new one a week ago and haven’t had any issues. I use the perfect prep machine though, not sure if that makes a difference. I shake it thoroughly after the “hot shot” of water and then again when it finishes filling. There may be a couple of tiny clumps but doesn’t cause problems. I’m also combination feeding, not sure if that’s a reason for the non reaction in my baby. He’s 6.5 months

mrs2468 · 08/07/2018 22:50

My almost seven week old used the old for the first few weeks and has been using the new for the last two. No issues.

boopdoop · 08/07/2018 22:55

My DS is 19 weeks. We've been using the new aptimal and had no issues. We're using the perfect prep to make up bottles and it's totally fine, not noticed anything different. Other than the 100g less for the same price which is v annoying!
