Something is not right

5 month old DS has been constipated for about 2 weeks prior to this week, we went to the GP and all was fine and she advised OJ in his water which we did, he started pooing normally for about 2 days then for about 3 days now he's had watery and cottage cheese looking poo.

Last night he pooed in his sleep which he never does and didn't even fuss, it was all over his bed and blankets. DH got him up this morning after we heard him stir and he wasn't right, pale and very quiet. I gave him a bottle and he perked up and was pretty much back to normal. I checked his soft spot - not sunken and his temp was normal. He seemed ok, went off for his 8.30am nap easily and slept 1 hour, woke up smiling.

He's just had another bottle and seemed all quiet again, was very reluctant to feed - crying out a few times but then giving in and drinking, could tell he was hungry. I rubbed his tummy and he seemed to get some relief from this. He's just gone to sleep in my arms - something he never does and I've popped him in his cot. Thinking he must have an upset tummy and needs some sleep.

I'm getting worried about him. Should I call 111?

Coming down with something. Probably nothing serious.
Give 111 a call

At 5 months I'd take him to out of hours and explain that you just have a feeling that something isn't right and describe the symptoms.

"Just a feeling" is usually accurate with small babies and they can go downhill so quickly it's always best to get a professional opinion sooner rather than later.

Isn't 5 months really young for orange juice? When I had kids, it was only breast milk or formula till 6 months (this was not in the UK either). Advice has probably changed in the last 15-20 years...

It's not advised as a drink but it's sometimes suggested in small doses as a sort of medicine for constipation.

@claraschu It was just a dribble mixed in with 3oz water. barely anything but enough to get him going again.

I am sure it is completely fine! I just was told (years ago) that orange juice was hard on a baby's stomach...

Yes. Because it gives them diarrhoea Grin - exactly the intended effect!
