She slept lovely up until 3 weeks ago, 7pm bedtime 7.15 latest she was tired. Now she appears to be WIDE AWAKE until 9-10. Nothing's changed, we try for an hour + some every night before we give up. Is this a regression? Did your 1yo go through this phase? Please tell me it's a just a phase! She still wakes up at the same time 7am, still naps well (not excessively or late) I just don't know why! It was like a light switch... any advice 😩 Thanks mums!!

Sorry no advice, just to say I feel for you, I am going to watch this thread as my 11 month old has only just started sleeping through so I am dreading being told it's another leap and we will only get a month out of the sleeping though lol.
I'm sure you are doing a great job and i keep my fingers crossed for you it is only a little leap and you'll be back to normal soon x

beautifulblue · 05/07/2018 22:23

Thanks @bourbon! appreciate that. I hope the same doesn't happen to you! 😂 I'm quite happy to ride it out (if I knew for sure it was a phase) but I want to make sure everything is ruled out as a potential cause! It has been hotter recently... maybe the weather is to blame 🤦🏼‍♀️ Congrats on the sleeping through the night! Although my daughter slept 7pm-7am she's only ever slept through twice in a year! So your onto a winner there!

Could she just be too hot, too hungry or too thirsty OP?

I have an 8 month old, my SIL has a 1yo and my friend has a 1yo and her friend also, and they have all started doing this this week!! We’re blamkng the heat but I have no idea what’s going on 😩

beautifulblue · 06/07/2018 10:15

@jilted no pretty certain it's none of those! Although it's been hot the bedroom is cool... but I suppose it could still be a contributing factor. Food/drink not the issue as she's uninterested in these things when she's awake. She is literally wide awake though, not tired but won't go just buzzing like she's drunk a coffee!
@cleo how strange! Maybe this is just something they do from time to time to test our will Grin

Are you breastfeeding? Are you drinking caffeine later in the day?

Not sure on the science of this, but my DS would be more restless after I'd drunk too much coffee. Which then made me need more coffee. Confused

beautifulblue · 06/07/2018 10:46

Yes breastfeeding, no caffeine! I'm not a massive coffee drinker I didn't even have 1 yesterday. But if I do it's always morning... I honestly feel like I've ruled everything out. I thought maybe 2 naps was to much now but dropping one only made it harder! Just hoping all of a sudden she'll go right back to how it was before!

Hi OP - what is your DD routine during the day?

My DD's daytime sleep needs went down between 10 and 15 months. I had to tweak her routine every couple of weeks (by continuously reducing her morning nap by 5 minutes) to protect night time sleep. I have also made sure DD did not nap beyond 3pm in the afternoon.

It is relatively common for children to change their sleep patterns around one year and start waking up early or fighting their bedtime. DD tried to do a bit of both but adjusting the routine did the trick.

beautifulblue · 06/07/2018 21:01

Hi @winter!
Well DD's usual routine is...
7am - wake up
10am - nap 1 hour-1 hour 30 mins
Then another afternoon nap of around 30-45mins. Usually around 3pm.
Today we were out until 4pm so she didn't nap & you know what? She went to sleep at 7pm! She was absolutely exhausted though & trying to fall asleep at about 6pm. (Felt terrible keeping her up) I'm thinking maybe she doesn't need that afternoon nap anymore though? But every where I read they still need 2... but they're all different aren't they?!

This sounds like a typical nap transition challenge:(. A lot of babies between 10-18 months are not quite ready for 1 nap but having 2 proper naps messes up their night time sleep (either at bedtime or in the morning).

A possible option with the routine like yours (long morning nap schedule) is to reduce the afternoon nap to 30 minutes and make sure it does not go beyond 3.30pm. The bedtime in this case will probably be around (or later than) 7.30pm. If your DD keeps fighting sleep at the bedtime, you can try to cut the afternoon nap by 5 minutes. There is definitely a chance your baby may be able to drop the second nap completely (mine was not ready until 15 months).

Here is an interesting article on toddler sleep but this regression usually happens later (my DD went through its mild version at around 14-15 months):

Good luck!

beautifulblue · 06/07/2018 22:17

I think judging by how exhausted she was at 6pm from no nap today she probably does still need that second one. I shall be giving what you've said a go tomorrow! I may even try to make it 2.30-3pm. (Very precise like I have that power) & see how we go! Thanks very much for your advice, the longer it's gone on the more I've suspected the day naps were the key, so thank you!
