Is it peeing or weeing?

Ds is starting to potty train. When I picked him up from the CM last week she mentioned that she had asked him to say 'wee' not 'pee'. (We say pee at home when talking to ds about this stuff)
She said that she didn't want her other mindee picking up the word as his mother doesn't allow him to say 'pee'.

Also apparantly, ds mentioned 'doing a pee' while she was at school doing the school run ans she said some of the mothers looked a 'bit surprised' - her words

It was all said in a very friendly chatty way but am I missing something major here?

Is it 'not nice' for children to say 'I want a pee' instead of ' I want a wee'.

I had no idea this was a faux pas in the world of parenthood. tbh the childish bit of me wants to say 'well I don't want ds learning that AWFUL word wee' but I'm willing to be put right on this if the consensus is that pee is not the right word for some reason.

It sort of comes naturally for me to say pee so I keep finding myself saying 'Do you want to pee.... oh I mean wee..? etc' and it is confusing.

So do I keep changing the pee to wee until it becomes second nature or do I stick to my pee (ewww!!)?

I suppose if we all said what it was instead of trying to find pleasant euphemisms, this wouldn't happen!!

We say wee in this house but I guess it's up to you.

I think that 'wee' is considered more polite that 'pee.'

I know a Spanish family who say 'piss' which raised a lot of eyebrows at Gymkids.

I think I'd feel the same, we were always taught that 'pee' wasn't a 'nice word' and we should say wee, so I am a bit surprised when I hear a child say pee.
That said though, it's entirely up to you what you say to ds

Ha ha - very funny OP.

Well, ours is definitely a wee house - but I really wouldn't pick anyone up on using pee. What bad form .

You could compromise with pee-wee ... or is that a character from Popeye?

Interesting bored. I think I missed out on this sort of thing as my parents spoke Italian at home so some of the finer 'niceties' of the English language might have passed me by. I honestly had no idea there was any difference.

'Wee' or 'wee wee' in our house.

Lazycow · 26/05/2007 15:03

I think I'll practising weeing - I don't want our family to come across as uncouth to my CM. Mind you - ds said something MUCH worse than pee yesterday and I'm living in dread that he says it at the CM

We use "wee" but I don't understand what is wrong with "pee", umless it is seen as being short for piss?!

I think there are more important things for people to have strong preferences over!

rowan1971 · 26/05/2007 15:08

It's pee in our house, but I do have a strong dislike of euphemisms. If someone is going to judge my four-year-old on the strength of the word he uses for urine, then they're the sort of person whose good opinion is not worth much to me!

Wee here, but was wee wee when they were younger. Actually I think dh will talk to ds1 about going for a pee. Or a widdle

One family I know uses "peewee" and for some illogical reason I can't stand this!

Hiya... In my family we have ALWAYS said PEE... when I was a little girl, my mum always refered to the act as 'peeing'. And she is very careful about what words she uses.... eg she abhors the word 'toilet', it is absolutely 'loo'...

Anyway, a friend of mine quite recently picked up on me saying 'pee' to my DD...
she said she was shocked that someone as polite as me would use such a word...
... anyway, subsequently I really make sure I use the word 'pee' at all times, especially when their are any mothers about who might be offended at such a word. Or, maybe I should just ask DD if she needs to shake her lettuce? Love that one.
