There's always more burps! :(

Hi ladies.
DD is 3.5 weeks old, and she holds onto her burps at night time, and I'm getting so exhausted! :( she breastfeeds, and then I wind her in a few different positions, get one or two good burps out, put her in her basket... And then within five or ten minutes she's grunting and groaning, and if I don't pick her up quick enough she vomits a little of her feed up. Then when I pick her up, after a while another burp comes. I keep winding, try to get another burp or two, then put her down... And the grunting and squirming all starts again. This can go on for hours! What am I doing wrong? This is baby number 4, her big brothers never did this, they just had a good burp and settled down again for a sleep, this is driving us insane! :(
Any tips and shared experience welcome! Xx

She also tenses with the wind pain, the burps tend to come out easier if we can soothe her enough to relax and let them out, but that's not always possible. She goes rigid in our arms with needing to burp bless her. :(

Have you tried infacol? Took about 3 days to start working for us but then we got 1 massive burp after each feed. - you give a dropper before every feed

My daughter was like this and turned out that she had a cows milk protein allergy. I too thought the grunting was all wind however it was tummy upset. She would also be sick like your DD does. After completely cutting dairy out of my diet things much improved

Cornishmumtobe; ah I'll give that a try, the health visitor was skeptical as to whether it works or not but it clearly worked for you so I'll give it a bash! Thanks!

Imjustsaying, that's interesting! My friends DD has a milk allergy, had bloody poos and all sorts though, I didnt realise it could just present with wind and grunting etc! I'll look into that!

Ha yes it works very well for us. We get comedy like huge burps now Grin starting using it at about 4 weeks and still going strong at nearly 5 months. Did try reducing our use a few weeks ago incase it wasn't needed anymore but the little bits of sick starting creeping back in so we are back on it. My cousin also found it useful for her DC. Have heard others that are skeptical too though so might depend on the baby.

Oh while I think about it - before we tried infacol my HV suggested it could be to do with my letdown being too strong causing baby to unlatch and take in air. She recommended hand expressing a small amount into a cloth before feeds (I.e. expressing away the forceful letdown). Didn't work for us but might help?

At that age I would sit burping my daughter for around 20 mins, as she would have lots of burps over that time. All went away after a few months and she would just burp once

Imjustsaying · 03/07/2018 17:30

My little girls symptoms did worsen to blood in poo, projectile vomiting and a rash however the allergy can present in just wind and stomach upset

CremeDeSudo · 03/07/2018 21:27

I'm having this exact problem with 3wo DD - it's mainly at night and is driving me up the wall. If I pick her up to cuddle she usually stops straight away. She's ff though. I've just ordered new teats to try as I think she's taking too much air. Wish I had the answer!

Mine did this, milk protein intolerance!

ODog · 04/07/2018 07:43

A flip opinion. Both of mine did this for a few weeks at around that age. Totally not recommended obvs but they slept lovely on their tummies during that time. It wasn’t an intolerance or anything, it was just a short and annoying phase that was solved by them sleeping on their fronts and passed in a few weeks and we went back to them sleeping in their backs.

Thank you everyone! Hearing all these different experiences so helpful, keep em coming!! :)

First night with infacol last night, and there was definitely an improvement... Not perfect, but it takes a few days to fully take effect by all accounts. Hope this is it, I'll still mention it to HV tomorrow at weigh in, see what they think.

I tried propping her up slightly towards her left last night and made a huge difference! I folded a towel up so her right side was slightly elevated. The cot is also elevated too. I think it's a bit of reflux.

Let us know what your HV says!

CremeDeSudo, I definitely will! Pleased to hear you had a better night!👍😁

cornishmumtobe, thanks for the tip, I've tried but I'm useless at hand expressing! Fast flow might be a factor though, I do have a powerful letdown... Hmm... Maybe I should take her off during feeds quite regularly to wind her, so it doesn't build up so much...
