Oh B**gger - I knew this moment would come eventually and I had planned to be so cool about it!

DS2 wants to know where babies come from and how do you know when you are having a baby.

Asked the classic "but how does the Daddy put a seed in the mummy?" as we drove to school this morning.

I spluttered that it was actually quite complicated and that we wouild sit down and talk about it tonight - and I'd find a good book to help him understand.

Don't know why it threw me like that - not the usual subject on the school run I s'pose.

Oh we haven't had that conversation but am sure we will soon - good luck!!

Desiderata · 25/05/2007 11:28

Ooooh, it's difficult, ain't it?

Maybe he'll have ... erm .. forgotten by tonight?

That's the best case scenario

skay · 25/05/2007 11:28

Usbourne Books do a very good book especially for younger children, called the flip flap body book. It is very good doesn't go into tooooooo much detail. but it should answer most questions.
Good Luck!!!

If he is aged between 3 to 7/8 look for the book 'Where Willy Went..the big story of a little sperm' author Nicholas Allan.
We bought this for our dd now 7 when she was 5 and she loved it.It's a very basic but well written childrens book.
We got it from red house. It even starts the concept of genetics as it mentions the fact that the child retains willy's charecteristics.
My dp and I love reading this to our dd and niece as we can't help laughing. It's funny

SueBaroo · 25/05/2007 11:35

We're still at the special cuddle stage, and probably will be for some time. I know what you mean about it throwing you Dd1 is always throwing me curveball questions at wildly inappropriate times.

florenceuk · 25/05/2007 11:36

What about "What's this (waving tampon around) for, Mum?"? Anyone got a quick one-liner for that one?

We've got that book singingmum and DS thought it meant that you needed water to get the sperm from the man to the woman cos Willy swam from Dad to Mum (mind boggles as to what he thought was actually happening - underwater acrobatics!)

zephyrcat · 25/05/2007 11:36

DD is asking me too, she is 5 so I will def look out for the 'where willy went....' book - I had the whole thing planned, I was going to be so matter of fact and cool too and fell to pieces when she asked!!

Just answer the question simply and factually, using words your ds will understand.

Your reaction now is going to have an impact on how he thinks of sex for the rest of his life.

Good luck!

singingmum · 25/05/2007 11:48

Florenceuk We used the book as a starting point for our dd.We then explained all the more awkward bits as a nd when she asked about them.It made it easier.
The funny thing is we never had a problem explaining to our ds now 12.It wasn't untill about 2 yrs ago we had to get a book for him and then it was because we found that he wouldn't talk about it with us(embarresed we think)
We bought him 'Living with a willy' We read the book ourselves first and found that it was a very down to earth look at the issues in fact all the issuesinc the section on oral and the big O.Book talks like ateen but with more correct info.Brill for reluctant older dc's

MegaLegs · 25/05/2007 12:27

Thank you for all the book suggestions.

Speccy and Fairyjay - that's exactly what I intended to do but when it came to the crunch I bottled it. Will have a little chat with him and DS1 (they're 6 and 7 by the way) before bed. Gulp!

A book we found good is "Mummy Laid an Egg".

Do you know I can't remember, worked here last week.

Hulababy · 25/05/2007 13:09

I started a thread on this topic just last night, as 5yo DD asked me how the seed actually got into mummy's tummy to make the baby. It threw me too as just wasn't expecting it.

Will have a look at your suggestions, especially the books.

Phraedd · 26/05/2007 09:55

My DD (8) and I just had this conversation and i just got out a pregnancy book and showed her. Answered any questions she had in a down to earth way and that was it

FrannyandZooey · 26/05/2007 10:06

Re: The tampon thing I just told ds that women have have some blood ready inside them each month in case a baby grows. If they are not having a baby, the blood comes out, and you don't want it to make your clothes wet, so you catch it with something.

I think dp told ds actually, he was not really bothered about it. Not a one liner but pretty simple!
