District nurse phone call after 3yr old in A&E?

Hi Everyone!!

So I'm basically desperate for someone to put my mind at rest here.. Our 3 year old son was having a very naughty day 4 days ago and we was in a shop, he was running around the whole shop and I was running around after him but when it got to going on the self check out I had turned my back for a second, he came running up to me with all this liquid on his face, thinking it was just water from his bottle I went to get a baby wipe... Turns out the stuff had left a spray bottle of bleach on the floor with the child lock off!!! He had sprayed it in his eyes! I continued to use the baby wipe untill they gave me a sterile eye wash, I took h out of the shop and then continued to wash his eyes... I immediately called nhs 111 who advised to take him to a&e.. After the eye wash he was completely fine but I wanted to take him to make sure he was OK... Long story short the doctors done their tests and the pH stick and he's completely fine.. But the next day I received a call from a District nurse asking how he was and said she was following up? Don't get me wrong I think it's brilliant that they do this but I'm so beside myself with worry now that they are going to take my son off me :( she thought it had happened at home but I said the whole story and she said"oh okay, because you wouldn't leave things like that laying around would you? " which I was a bit confused with because of course I wouldn't!

Is there anyone who could put my mind at rest? She said it was just a courtesy call but in my mind I'm going to get a visit and social services will come round and you always hear these horror stories of kids being taken away from their parents for no reason... Please can someone help :(

I had a call after a run of a+e 'incidents' involving dd2, some vanish oxi action in a teacup, a Polly pocket shoe up her nose, and a bottle of anbesol downed in a heartbeat

I was mortified, but it was fine and helped me be a LOT more vigilant!!

Was it a HV? They get notified of A&E visits, mine phoned me when I was still in hospital with my 7mo DS because the nurses reported our cosleeping. I was annoyed but it is what it is I suppose.

flapjackfairy · 29/06/2018 22:02

They will not take your child. Really they have no grounds at all . It was a scary accident that wasnt your fault and you did everything right to resolve it. calm down it will be fine. Soc services would have contacted you themselves if there were concerns , i am sure the nurse was just checking he was ok just as she said .
You sound a great mum so please dont worry any more x

I've had calls both times my daughter was in a&e with febrile convulsions- they get notified and follow it up - it's just to offer support, nothing sinister in my view...

flapjackfairy · 29/06/2018 22:04

Ps i am a foster carer and believe me they do not ( and indeed cannot ) remove your child for no reason .

Glowbug59 · 29/06/2018 22:05

I had HV follow ups after a&E visits (object in nose and head cut). I worked in safeguarding so knew the a&E reports came over though so wasn’t surprised or worried. Glad your DS is ok!

Buddyelf · 29/06/2018 22:06

This happened to me a while ago when DD2 had been in A&E after banging her nose.

She fell and we thought she might have broken it so we took her to A&E, she was fine.

Next day I got a call of the HV as visits to A&E are sent to them and as this classed as a head injury they had to follow up. She was really nice and concerned about not just dd but about how I was as well. Don’t worry, it’s routine

SoyDora · 29/06/2018 22:06

The HV’s always get notified when a child that age is in A&E, and they usually follow it up. We had a follow up phone call when DD fractured her leg at 18 months, she was really kind and supportive.
They’re not going to take your child away.

*off

anotherangel2 · 29/06/2018 22:09

I had HV when I took DD to walk in clinic but then left, I did inform the staff. I just left her a voice mail to explain that I had over reacted in taking her and her swollen red eye calmed down while we were waiting and I though Home was a better place for her to be. Nothing else was ever said about it.

They did not ring after an a and e visit resulted in a hospital stay but that was illness and we had a follow up with the GP.

In this situation if she was going to contact SS then she would tell you first.

Dobbythesockelf · 29/06/2018 22:10

My dd found some nasal sprayvin my handbag and sprayed it up her nose or so we thought. So we took her to a and e. A few weeks later I had a phone call from HV as they had been informed. They wanted to discuss what happened etc. I didn't realise she could reach the shelf I put my handbag on and have stopped leaving it there. They wanted to do a home visit bit ended up not coming as I had hyperemesis at the time. They obviously were not worries at all as I haven't heard from them since.

SluttyButty · 29/06/2018 22:14

I had a phone call after a few 'head related' injuries with ds2 and A&E visits to stitch/glue/X-ray his head. She was fine because she knew me, was never bought up again.

MelanieTerri27 · 29/06/2018 22:17

Thank you so much everyone for your replies, honestly you don't know how much every single one meant! I've been worrying myself sick about it, I have anxiety as it is so my mind goes to the extreme haha... He has just had a review from a nursery nurse a couple of months ago and she was so happy with his progress, it's just the first phone call I've had like it and it makes you panic!

So reassuring that you have all had this before...even it they ask for a visit should I worry? All they will see is how spoilt he is with all of his toys/teddys/clothes haha xx

We had a phone call over dd ( now 13 ) when she was about 2
She bumped her head and then about a week later while we were away at a wedding and mil was looking after her she got hold of mils blood pressure tablets . She didn’t know if dd had taken any but on the off chance she had she took her to A&E.
Health visitor phoned to ask if I was coping, I was a bit pissed off at the time but later I appreciated that they were just checking up

BrazzleDazzleDay · 29/06/2018 23:27

Melanie it will be ok, I promise.

To pp's who have had follow ups, ive had 4 split heads in 3 dc, not a jot heard from anyone ever. Two of those with one dc within 10 months

BrazzleDazzleDay · 29/06/2018 23:31

Hoppinggreen as a full grown 31 year old, I find your comment very off. Do you take b.p pills? Cause I can assure you they make you feel like shit and can kill.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 29/06/2018 23:34

It's totally a routine thing. We had a follow up call after my son was in with bronchiolitis, they like to make sure they're ok. I think it's a fairly new thing that they're doing. They rang the day after, 3 days after and then discharged him. Quite reassuring actually

Lefroy · 29/06/2018 23:35

My DS (age 3) has been in A&E at least four times in the last 18 months and we've never had a call or follow up from HV 😳 should I be worried they're NOT calling me?

SofiaAmes · 29/06/2018 23:39

I even got a call once questioning why my ds and my neighbor's ds had been at A&E on the same day (a few hours apart). I wasn't quite sure how to pacify the HV as to the lack of an A&E conspiracy on our block.

I do hope you made a complaint to the shop about the bleach spray being left around.

Hoppinggreen · 30/06/2018 08:51

brazzle as most of DH family have familial hypertension and I used to work for one of the largest manufacturers of BP tablets in the world I am not unfamiliar with them, their side effects and potential dangers
However, I’m a bit baffled which comment you find “off”. I think you must have interpreted something I’ve said
Do you think I was pissed of with mil? I was because dd shouldn’t have been able to access the tablets but she absolutely did the right thing taking her to A&E. I was initially pissed off with a call from the HV but then got over it very quickly
