Toddler always scratching himself

My toddler is always scratching himself. His nails grew longer than normal recently and he's got some really red marks where he's scratched himself at the bottom of his back, just above his nappy.

We put cream on him, but I'm wondering what could be causing the itch/need to scratch. Any ideas?

Eczema maybe? What does the skin look like?

Itscurtainsforyou · 29/06/2018 22:04

He's had eczema before and it's not like this, it's the scratch marks that are sore rather than the skin iyswim.

Is it just the heat maybe? Mine is quite scratchy atm, and I think she's just hotter and sweatier than normal.

No he's been doing it for a while (although it's been worse while it's hot).

What can make children itch/scratch? Worms??

Maybe it's the nappy, have you tried a different brand/size?

Some times scratching an itch makes it worse and a scratch-itch-scratch cycle starts. It might be worth trying all the above suggestions and giving an age appropriate antihistamine.

My eczema prone son used to scratch around the top of his nappy when he wore pampers. They smell really chemically and used to irritate his skin. Maybe try a different brand?

Itscurtainsforyou · 01/07/2018 10:26

We don't wear pampers as the smell was awful.

It happens wearing both Aldi & Tesco brand.

Yesterday he was scratching everywhere, legs, bottom etc. I wish I knew how to help him.

Moisturise his skin. My daughter did this and had eczema on her arms and legs. Even though her skin on her back looked fine it obviously was irritating her. I used her moisturiser from head to foot twice a day regardless of if she has obvious signs of eczema and it helps with the itching.

You can get an E45 itch relief cream, we used it once when my daughter had an itchy reaction to some laundry detergent.

We had this. But if eczema but also loads of itching even where skin was ok. Had aveeno which helped a bit but then tried childs farm moisturiser and it's brilliant, he rarely scratches. And they do shampoo, bubble bath etc. It's cleared up any eczema and stopped him generally itching.
