Breastfeeding advice for 16 days baby

Hello my son is 16 days today and I'm breastfeeding him but still confused i have so many questions about breastfeeding as I'm first time mom. I'm always worried is he is getting enough milk, in the first days he was usually sleeping mostly of the day so he wake up every 2,5-3h. But the last few days he started to suffer from colic or reflux still not sure but he is crying, not sleeping enough, pull up his legs to the tummy, has difficulty with gas and wind. But usually he has more dirty nappies around 4-5 per day. He started to ask more frequently breastfeeding, he is awake and he wants almost every hours. Yesterday I decided to listen him to breastfeed when he is asking for and he was vomiting terrible. Today same he seems hungry to me if i keep him 2.5 hours for breastfeeding but also I'm afraid that he will vomit again. Yesterday we had appointment with midwife and she checked his weight ans she said that my son is doing fine 180 g for a week. How often do you breastfeed your babies, do you offer both breast or only one( my son usually fell asleep on the first breast so I don't give him another). I appreciate every opinion. Thanks

Your boobs don’t produce on demand. Your baby’s frequent feeding is placing the order for tomorrow or the next day. He’s just hit the first growth spurt, so will naturally want to feed more regularly. Get yourself somewhere cool and do nothing else for the next week if you can. Make sure you’re well hydrated and fed. Good luck.

Both my kids vomited loads in the early days, looking back they may have had colic or reflux.
Keep feeding on demand and keep yourself well fed and hydrated and get as much sleep as possible. It gets better I promise! Good luck

Congratulations on your new LO Thanks

The current advice is to feed your baby whenever they want it. There is some information about your baby’s hunger cues here Smile

It’s also very normal for the baby to be pretty sleepy at first and then seem more awake and wanting to be fed more often.

Like Titty says, you are probably experiencing a growth spurt right now.

If you think he’s got wind, try looking at the “tiger in the tree hold” on YouTube, that hold usually helps. Wind him, try skin to skin and feed him again.

Ideally you should feed from both sides at each feed but if baby is asleep after one and won’t wake for the other side, that’s fine. Just feed from the side you didn’t use next time.

Sorry I didn’t reply to your worries about your baby not getting enough milk? Is there something that is making you particularly worried about this?

Is baby gaining weight? Is he bright and alert at times? Are you getting 5 to 6 wet nappies a day? There are some more signs that baby is getting enough milk here. Unlike formula fed babies who have to drink huge amounts to meet their needs, bf babies will take on average 25 floz in 24 hours from the age of 6 weeks to 6 months so you really don’t need to worry about how much he gets, just as long as he is seeing and pooing enough.

If he is excessively sick, have you tried keeping him upright for a while after feeds?

Thanks for all the links provided I found really good information. My son is having more wet nappies( 5-6 maybe more) and also more dirty (4-5 usually he is doing poop when I'm still breastfeeding him he will make his nappy full). Also about the weight i had yesterday appointment and they checked him he had 180 g in a week. So probably I don't have Reasons to be worried about. My conserns were that he was asking more these days maybe in a hour, we are struggling with tummy problems and he can't sleep these days and he seems hungry but when I'm feeding him more often like yesterday i did he was vomiting a lot. I'm holding him after every feeding but he doesn't want to burp ( since he is born he maybe burp only 5 times). Also i was usually feeding him only from one side and then next feeding from the another side. Maybe he is not getting enough milk from only one side so he seems after a while again hungry i will start offering him another side from now.

It sounds as though you are both doing really, really well. He’s done more than the average weight gain. You really have nothing to worry about in that regard. You definitely need to feed him when he wants it, especially in this heat as your BM is a drink as well as a food. He may just be asking for more because he’s thirsty.

How often is he vomiting? Some vomit can be normal. If you think it’s huge amounts it’s worth talking to your MW if you still have one Smile

Still i have she didn't discharge us as the cord is still here it doesn't fall off ( one more thing that is making me worried 😲 about vomiting mostly look like spit up after feeding as he doesn't burp but yesterday was huge amount. Until now he was vomiting few times huge amounts otherwise is only small spit up after feeding. But like you said probably I don't have reasons to be worried. Everything is only i am first time mum and everything make me worried because I don't have experience 😊 thanks all for advice and sharing your experience

My DD would feed sometimes till she was sick.. a lot of sick! It was just her stretching her belly and getting my body to produce more milk I was told. Just carry on giving him what he needs, it'll all make sense in the end!
I used Infacol when she had a bit of wind and it did help!
Sounds like you're both doing amazingly well and keep it up OP have faith in yourself Thanks

teaandbiscuitsforme · 28/06/2018 23:03

You really do need to offer him BF whenever he asks in this hot weather. Don't watch the clock. Not only is he going through regular growth spurts and trying to boost your supply, but he will be very warm and he needs regular feeds as that is his only means of hydration.

As his nappies and weight gain are good, I would follow his cues and feed as often as necessary in these early days/months.

spugzbunny · 28/06/2018 23:10

Where are you based? There's a lot of free breastfeeding clinics around that are great just for reassurance!

It all sounds completely normal for a young baby. At that age your baby will feed for what seems like hours and then feed again soon after! They are establishing a supply of milk. Think of it like training your boobs to produce the right amount of milk. After a while (5/6 weeks) it'll calm down! Just feed them whenever they want.

All babies are gassy. I was so worried about mine and tried everything but she just grew out of it around week 8. Just keep baby upright when you can and rub their back gently. Also try cycling their legs around when they are lying down to help with farts.

You are doing a great job! The fact that you are worried shows how much you care!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/06/2018 08:49

Now you know that he’s getting enough milk, that some vomit is normal and to feed whenever he wants, and you know his feeding cues, are you feeling any,ore relaxed OP? Smile
