Going on holiday next week - toddlers broke his arm!

Hey all, my 2 and a half year old managed to fall off a chair on the weekend and break his lower left arm in 2 places 😟 he had to have it moved back into the right place under general anaesthetic yesterday and it’s now in a plaster cast and sling. He’s doing REALLY well and is not letting it bother him at all, even jumping on the trampoline still which makes me constantly on edge!

But we have a weeks holiday coming up on the 5th of July (Just over a week), and initially I wanted to cancel it because I couldn’t see how he could enjoy himself. But I found out it was £450 to cancel even with insurance, plus seeing how well he’s managing has me thinking he’s going to be fine 😊 I’ve ordered a waterproof cast cover so he can still enjoy the water/pool: www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/dp/B007UONM5E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jlOmBb8M1S1P7?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-parenting-3289413-Going-on-holiday-next-week-toddlers-broke-his-arm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/dp/B007UONM5E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jlOmBb8M1S1P7

So I’m just wondering if anyone has experience of taking their young toddler away while they’re in a cast? The airline and doctors are happy for him to go without any doctors notes or anything which is good! Have anyone also used any waterproof cast covers before and are they good)

Thanks everyone :)

Just got back from the trauma clinic and the doctor is very happy with how the bones are looking. We have to go back Tuesday and he says he may need to split it, but also may not (not what what'll dictate that!)

What is actually involved with splitting a cast? Is it physically divided then strapped together with bandages or something? The doctor has said if it does need splitting he'll give us some elastic plasters to keep it together from when we land until we get home...? Seems a bit confusing! Does the cast come off during the flight or something?

Can't help you with the cast info, but if he's bouncing around now, he'll be bouncing around on holiday too. Toddlers are fairly adaptable!

DH broke his leg aged 6/7 and now can't even remember which one it was!

Are you flying? If so tell the fracture clinic. He may need a split cast to do so.

Otherwise waterproof cover and enjoy

Yep we are the doctor said he may need to split the cast on Tuesday but to be honest I'm not sure what that means. I imagine a waterproof cover would still be fine wouldn't it? I've got those 'Bloccs' ones :)

Mate's little girl recently broke her arm, she had a traditional plaster cast on her arm and then after a couple of weeks had a plastic one put on - maybe that's what the doc means?

halfwitpicker · 28/06/2018 12:44

It was a fibreglass one actually, after the plaster one

They split it of you are flying in case the change in air pressure makes the casted body part swell. Splitting the cast means it won't be sticking into him and uncomfortable if it does swell.

BertieBotts · 28/06/2018 12:48

It just means they will put on a cast with a hinge in case of swelling or pressure during the flight.

Always a good idea to take another adult into a consultation so one of you can concentrate on what the dr is saying and ask questions while the second person fields the child. Otherwise you are stuck with doing all three tasks yourself, not easy, but if the dr says something you don't understand don't just nod, say you didn't understand. They don't mind.

Hi all, well we got back from holiday yesterday and it went fantastically well 😊 the cast didn’t need to be split, and his cast stayed bone dry with the great-but-ugly Bloccs cast protector, which we nicknamed his ‘flipper’! Thanks for everyones advice 😊
