Hi,
My daughter is 1 this week, she loves the books that came free in the health visitor pack - 'clip clop' & 'baby's day.' But gets bored really quickly if I try & read her anything more substantial. I've been looking for similar baby books as we've read those 2 to death now but I can't find anything as short/simple! Does anyone have any good recommendations?
Thanks!

I read my 7 month old any picture book. If she gets grizzly we just stop the story but most days she listens happily to the story. My favs are
If animals kissed goodnight
10 little fingers and 10 little toes
The gruffalo
Dear zoo
We’re going on a bear hunt
10 little... (dinosaurs, princesses, pirates, monsters)

That’s just a few favourites. Asda usually have good stories two for £7.

For really short books try the that’s not my series.

Thanks @cherryblossom!
I have seen the that's not my books they seem to have great ratings too. I will give them a go.. both clip clop & baby's day are rhyming books so I tried another reasonably short rhyming book but she didn't seem interested in that either. I wish I could get inside her brain sometimes to see what is fun to her lol!

Honestly just read any picture book and talk about pictures, read a page or two, whatever. Go at her pace and build her stamina. Julia Donaldson has a nice series of shorter rhyming books. I have one called rats nap I think. I don’t love it but is colourful and short. Daily reading is great for their language development so you’re doing the right thing by perservering. You can choose one of your longer books and just pick a page and make up your own story or describe the picture. There’s a cow. It’s a brown cow. Can you point to the brown cow? ( sorry I have a passion for early reading skills (early years teacher!)). 😊

Mine loves picture books where i name various objects. We have a farm one, big machines and a couple of others I can’t remember!
That’s not my.... series. Or other ones with the different textures.
Axel schleffler’s books are good, such as flip flap farm and rabbits nap. And a bit older the Julia Donaldson ones like gruffalo, stick man etc.
Spot the dog.
Peppa pig
Guess how much I love you
Counting books

Any of the hard books in the library are worth a try.

DrWhy · 25/06/2018 21:47

I second lots of the ones above but a shorter one with a nice rhythm is ‘the noisy way to bed’ also an old classic ‘each peach pear plum’ or longer but a big hit with mine ‘peepo’.
We still struggle to get through ‘the gruffalo’ but ‘10 little dinosaurs’ goes down well as do some of the Sandra Boynton books - ‘Hippos go Beserk’ and the Bedtime book.

DrWhy · 25/06/2018 21:49

Oh and more classics ‘Dear Zoo’ and ‘Oh Dear’ both lift the flap books.

LyricalDanceFlap · 25/06/2018 21:50

Charity shops are ace for books. My DD is 14 months and this last week has started bringing us books to read to her which is very sweet - she likes the That’s Not My ones, Toddle Waddle by Julia Donaldson, Peepo and Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, and some random ones with pictures of baby’s faces, animals, and household objects in.

LyricalDanceFlap · 25/06/2018 21:53

She does like Dear Zoo as well but is a huge fan of tearing the flaps of the lifty flappy ones so I try avoid them for now! We have a board book version of the Very Hungry Caterpillar too which she also likes.

soundsystem · 25/06/2018 21:59

Current favourite's for my one year old are Bedtime Bear and Hide and Seek Pig. Rhyming and flaps to lift seems to be a good combo! Also a fan of Pip and Posy (him, not me so much).

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/06/2018 21:59

Try her with lift the flap books. I've yet to meet an older baby / toddler who does love a lift the flap book.

Julia Donaldson one's rhyme too (Rabbit's nap, Hide and seek pig, postman bear and Fox's socks) they can be picked up cheaply at asda
The spot ones are also loves here

Agree the that's not my books are a good choice too

DD also loves 'you must never touch a dinosaur' which is a touchy feel book but also rhymes

Otherwise what about First word type books where each page has a picture and a word. You can get them with patterns or sparkly and textured bits to make them more interesting

BartlebyTheScrivener · 25/06/2018 22:04

Both of my children have absolutely adored Toddle Waddle by Julia Donaldson.

beautifulblue · 25/06/2018 22:44

We have dear zoo & foxs socks neither went down particularly well unfortunately. Tried what the lady bird heard on holiday, although it's long it rhymes but that got 1 page of interest. The wonderful things you will be (which I think is lovely) lasted 5 seconds. But clip-clop & baby's day I could read 15x each & she'd sit there gleefully! So odd! Thanks for all the recommendations everyone I will be browsing. I like the sound of each peach pear plum. Sound like words she'd enjoy hearing me repeat 😂 I will definitely persevere!

My little boy loved (and still does)

Beep beep toot toot and tip tip dig dig by Emma Garcia
Wow said the owl by Tim hopgood - all his books are lovely
Rod Campbell books - Buster's zoo and Oh dear
Also, anything by Emily Gravett, especially Dogs

ByeByeTrain · 25/06/2018 22:53

Oh and Petr Horacek - Choo choo and Beep Beep were his favourites.

SharronNeedles · 25/06/2018 22:59

There are some nursery rhyme ones you can buy with a button on the front which plays the song and inside on each page are the words. my DS adores these and does all the actions now (although I will forever have head, shoulders, knees and toes stuck in my head)

TefalTester123 · 26/06/2018 10:39

Hug by Jez Alborough

My son is now 17 but I still remember this as one of his favourites. A chimp (Bobo if I remember - you can see how many times we read it) searches through the jungle for someone to hug, encounters lots of animals on the way until he finds his mum. Only a couple of words in it but it was an absolute hit.

TefalTester123 · 26/06/2018 10:41

When she gets a bit older then Fix it duck and Duck in the Truck are fab too - worth putting them on a Christmas list.

LyricalDanceFlap · 26/06/2018 13:47

Just spotted another nice one called Orange Pear Apple Bear, our copy is sellotaped heavily from my DS reading it! It’s a chunky board book one with 1/2 words per page so very simple.
