what temperature do you wash your nappies?

I usually do them on 60 degrees but am wondering if 40 degrees would be ok. We use tea tree oil for sanitising - can't use anything else due to temperamental sewage treatment plant.

Thanks!

I always wash at 60 to kill all bacteria

Manictigger · 24/05/2007 13:30

I wash at 60 because when dd was young she had dreadful thrush and I'm still a bit paranoid about it.

Brangelina · 24/05/2007 13:31

I do mine at 60° too, plus plenty of sunshine (when there is any) for drying.

60 and line dry when it's nice and sunny.

nappyzone · 24/05/2007 13:45

I do mine at 40 then about once every 3 weeks i do em at 60 for a blast through. At 40 they come out shiney clean but whether any germs are lerking i couldnt tell you but they look clean!

Mostly 40, with an occasional 60 thrown in for good measure. I use tea tree oil instead of washing powder. I usually give them a quick rinse cycle first, or sometimes a prewash (I use a little bit of washing powder for this)

The only time my nappies started to smell was when I used washing powder more frequently on them

lljkk · 24/05/2007 14:09

60 only if they had poo on them.

Urine-only naps go straight in machine + get filtered thru with rest of wash at 40. Urine is sterile and has anti-microbial qualities. Not even mildew will grow on it, which is handy because I can immediately throw other muddy or wet clothes in machine with the smelly naps. I always wait until machine is full. Even after a few days in there, if urinated nappies are present nothing grows on the muddy / wet clothes (bonus).

archiesmummy · 24/05/2007 14:21

Urine is sterile, but not where it comes from, so there will still be bacteria in the nappy.
Anyway, most people I speak to in RL seem to wash theirs on 40 with their other laundry, so can't be that bad perhaps????

Cappuccino · 24/05/2007 14:29

40

snugglebumnappies · 24/05/2007 16:59

40 degrees and had no probs

NannyL · 24/05/2007 18:58

i do mainly 40 with the occasional 60 (when i have charges in washables)

40 seems clean enough tbh but i do blast them at 60 every few weeks!

shonaspurtle · 24/05/2007 19:00

40 with whatever else I have to wash and then occasionally at 60 if things are getting a bit stained.

abracadabra · 24/05/2007 19:14

Thanks a lot - think I'll try 40 and see what happens!

Do you all wash the family underwear (pants, knickers) at 60 too? If not, why not?

Ceolas · 27/05/2007 18:41

Because I don't soil my undies

I always did my nappies at 60, but wondering if 40 really is good enough...

CorrieDale · 27/05/2007 18:44

40 and occasionally 60 if DS has had a tummy bug or I'm feeling 'oh sod it' to the environment. I use tea tree oil sprayed on the nappy mesh bag though - more to prevent room stink than to kill germs. I find that 60 doesn't get rid of the really tough stains any more than 40 does. Only sunshine does that!
