Dark grey poop; anyone know the cause?!

Hi all,

Sorry if posted in wrong place but not at potty training stage so didn't think that was the right place!

DD is nearly 11 months old and for the last 24hrs has been doing very dark grey poops, a colour she hasn't produced before (hint of dark green, sorry if TMI) so I'm a little worried. She's teething but otherwise her happy normal self and had a good appetite and is drinking lots, both formula and water as normal.

Google search shows light grey and white poops are to be considered a warning sign but these are very dark grey, no black or sign of blood.

Google also said it could be a sign of too much iron or a change in diet; she's been eating a lot of chicken and broccoli recently, and I have changed her over from SMA extra hungry baby infant formula to SMA 6+ months follow on formula, do you think this could be the cause? Anyone experienced similar? x

Hi Op,
I must admit not sure about the grey poo, but the food follow on milks do contain more iron and not necessarily needed. It was a way for the formula companies to get around advertising hence the follow on milks. I would just stick with SMA 1 especially now you are close to moving onto to cows milk. As long as your baby is receiving a varied diet with iron rich foods, no need to use the follow on milk. How many bottles is your LO on now?

Hi Kites,

That's really interesting, I didn't realise that about follow in milk, and I only changed over to it last last week so the timing fits. She still has approx 30 fl oz per day plus as much water as she wants, so maybe that's it... thank you for replying Smile

No probs, sounds like it's the formula as food wise what you mentioned your lo eats sounds great.
When you pop out to the shops look at the iron for stage 1 and 2 and you'll see it's doubled on some brands. Iron is super important and very much needed but too much isn't great. It's better to be absorbed via food in truth even though many babies rarely eat much. I think it's best stick on stage 1 as the energy / minerals/ vitamins matches that of breastmilk in terms of content in all the stage 1 (from birth formulas) Smile

Fab, thank you; think I'll be swiftly going back to stage 1! Smile
