This morning I fell down four steps whilst holding my 3.5week old son.. he didnt go anywhere or hurt himself. I rang 111 who told me to get him checked at the gp surgery but there were no appointments so I had to take him to A&E. The doctor checked him over and he is absolutely fine but at the end of the appointment he said to me ‘so what have you learnt then?’ Am I being overly sensetive or is that an incredibly insensetive thing to say to a visibly upset first time Mum. It was a accident I didnt mean to fall and of course was being careful.

What a patronising twat that Doctor sounds!

I was once walking down the street in Australia with my 3 month old DD in a Baby Bjorn...and I was wearing flip flops.

I tripped up and to save her I had to put both arms round her and take the whole fall on my knees.

It was so painful! And there was nobody around! Nobody to say "Are you ok?" I was so shook up!

It's very upsetting when it happens but it happens a lot!

Don't worry...you probably didn't even need to see the doctor...not if the baby stayed in your arms.x

Thankyou for replying. It was scary and felt shook up as you did!

My partner didnt seem to think it was an insensetive thing to say but I have been crying since he said it and feeling like a bad Mum.

No, not insensitive at all.

A friend dropped her 5 month old baby down the stairs and fractured his skull. She was interviewed by social services.

You have got off lightly. Hopefully you’ve learnt to be careful when holding a child walking down the stairs.

twat thing to say from the doctor.... Dropped my baby when he was two weeks old down a flight of stone steps when I was trying to fold the pram and get my keys out...
He was unharmed but we did go to A&E and they were super super nice and said that this happens to the majority of new mums and not to worry.
Youd be hard pressed to find a first time mother who has not had some kind of experience like this.
Flowers

and yes I suppose you do learn something but of course you are only learning when the child is newborn... it takes a while for it to be second nature to check that everything is safe and secure (and even then accidents still can happen)
Deeply insensitive for the doctor to phrase it that way tho considering the amount of times he will have seen this happen.
