So ever since my baby was born she never settled very well had to be in her arms etc etc when she was weeks old I read about white noise and would play YouTube pretty much all night anything to get some sleep when she was around 3 months I got an Ollie the owl that plays white noise for 20 minutes then goes off it comes back on if it hears her cry or senses movement problem is when the sounds stops she wakes up and needs to be resettled by me it's as though she cannot sleep in silence at all, any tips Smile I don't want to resort to YouTube all night again as it's ridiculous ,has anybody experienced anything similar how can I get her to settle in silence ?Confused

I'm in the same boat... my oldest would settle no problem with a few mins of white noise so I put the hairdryer on for a few minutes if she woke during the night. Babysitters also knew to do this rather than pick her up (we lived abroad at the time and I think they all thought I was miscommunicating due to language barrier, or that I was some mad foreigner!! 😂)

My youngest (now 9 months) sleeps best with quite loud white noise so hairdryer is best but obviously I can't leave that on and go out the room due to fire risk... so we are now doing as you did with youtube. None of the teddies etc that play white noise are loud enough for him anyway. It's annoying and I have no advice I'm afraid, except that if youtube works just go for it!!! Anything for a good night's sleep for the baby and for the parents is worth it!

Sure you can play it all night unless it's bothering other people. Buy a cheap analogue radio and play him radio static all night. He'll grow out of it.

FatCow2018 · 10/06/2018 08:12

Just leave it on?! All my children had iPods playing sounds of heavy rain to help them sleep and have done since birth. My eldest is 11 and obviously she can sleep without it but she finds it soothing and it stops her hearing the birds etc. DD2 is 3 and DS1 is 1 and they have it too. If it helps, go with it.

*have, not had! They still do!

astoundedgoat · 10/06/2018 08:15

You can get little white noise machines on Amazon - lots of people (adults) use them when travelling etc. We used one with dd1 for about a year.

sobersandra · 10/06/2018 08:16

Yes what @astoundedgoat said.my MIL gave us a machine that would stay on or fade away on a timer. It was great.

coffeeandrainbows · 10/06/2018 08:18

We use a fan for white noise at night. If you want to slowly wean her off it you can start out with the highest setting and then gradually reduce it over a few weeks to the lowest then eventually move it further out fo the room.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 10/06/2018 08:20

Battery operated white noise machine.

MasonJar · 10/06/2018 08:20

Why is it a problem to carry on with the white noise?
I've been using a white noise machine at night for years, it really helps me sleep as blocks the sound of cars, late night revellers etc.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/06/2018 08:21

You can buy a white noise machine.

They have different sounds and loud settings and are safe to use overnight.

hunterbear · 10/06/2018 08:24

You know there's loads of white noise apps available. Just set your phone to 12 hours of noise.

isitfridayyet1 · 10/06/2018 08:28

Get a my hummy they last for 22 hours and you can change the volume

Kraggle · 10/06/2018 08:32

We use an old iPod with a white noise app for dd. Me and dh also sleep with white noise, I get irritated at the sound of us breathing otherwise! I don’t see the issue with it?

Dd1 had white noise since birth and now at 5 hasn’t had it for a year or two.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 10/06/2018 08:34

There’s an app called baby sound sleeper or similar. We had it on all night when dd was little.
You can set it to continuous or set how long you want it to play for and how long to fade out for. It also has a ‘listen’ function where it starts whenever they make a noise, if you choose not to have it on continuous.

We just had it playing on an old phone.

beargrass · 10/06/2018 08:36

What winky said. We bought a reconditioned Kindle and downloaded the app.

TuTru · 10/06/2018 08:40

Wow I think I missed a trick here.

Ewan the dream sheep and a radio is what I used for my grandaughter tho. Wish I’d known this white noise thing 25 yrs ago lol

butlerswharf · 10/06/2018 08:52

We use a fan for white noise overnight too.

Figmentofimagination · 10/06/2018 08:54

My DS (1) has an old iPhone in his room playing white noise all night and for nap time (air conditioner noise). We use an app called white noise baby. It can be used continuously or on a timer. It also has a sensor where if a baby cries it will turn it back on. I prefer to just leave it on all night on low though as I think he finds it comforting.

villainousbroodmare · 10/06/2018 08:58

Sometimes I wake up and cry when the white noise goes off. Seriously, I love it!

seven201 · 10/06/2018 09:14

We have a white noise machine that can stay on all night. We don't use it now but used to on bad nights and things like bonfire night. It's on amazon, white and green and sort of water drop shaped. Batteries last really really well too.

PotOfMemories · 10/06/2018 09:16

We've got a mains white noise machine which plays all night. Still use it and ds is 2.5. It's ace.

Onesundaymorning · 10/06/2018 09:19

We bought a white noise machine from amazon. My little boy (now 2 1/2) still finds it very relaxing and calls it his 'sounds'. He reminds me to put his 'sounds on' if I forget!

BoneThugs · 10/06/2018 09:25

My twins were born very premature at 29 weeks. When we got them home after 8 weeks, they were so used to the sounds of the hospital they couldn’t sleep without white noise. I just downloaded a white noise app on my phone and kept it playing all night. They’ve always slept through all night

Peachesandcream15 · 10/06/2018 09:45

Another vote for leave it on. My dd has gone through phases with white noise. She doesn't want it on now. Yours may well grow out of it in their own time.

TheWeatherGirl1 · 10/06/2018 10:46

We use an app on an ipad.
