still unsure about childcare.

my dd1 is starting school in sept, dd2 will be nearly 2. I have to go back to work having been a SAHM up until now. I'm looking at probably 3 full days a week. Anyway, dd2 is no problem. she will be going to nursery for those three days. She loves being around other children and there's a really good nursery nearby which is why I've chosen this over a childminder. The problem is dd1. I have found an after school club who will pick her up from school and I'm trying to find a job where I'll be able to drop her off in the mornings, but what about school holidays? We don't have any family to have her and I've haven't found any clubs that cater for school holidays. Would nursery take school age children? I need to get the childcare clear in my head as it's really bugging me at the moment! thanks

I am in exactly the same boat as you which is why I chose a CM as she would have both of them in the school holidays.

Otherwise you will fork out a small fortune for both of them at separate places.

The other thing you could do is see if another mum at school would have yours 3 days a week if you had her child the other 2 days.

If you find an answer to school holiday childcare, short of becoming a teacher, do let me know! Childcare actually gets harder as they get older...

we will be doing the same come sept. dd2 will remain at the cm and dd1 will be at cm before and after school and holiday care.

once they are both at school then dh and i will take our annual leave seperately across the holidays - having 3 weeks off together for going away. the dds will also have their own holiday with the grandparents or will go to a summer camp either at the local sports centre or our childrens centre.

whatever you do you'll need to share things like dropping off / picking up with your OH - it is quite reasonable for him to ask for flexible working too.

I know I'm really really lucky and this may not be an option if you are starting a new job. But I've have been given a term time contract (and I'm not a teacher) and been able to spread my hours over 5 days so I can drop off and pick up from school (rather than doing 3 full days). I work for NHS and they have a family friendly policy. You could ask.
