Tartar on 12 month old teeth

Hello there. I'm really gutted because my baby has developed yellow tartar on the front of his two bottom teeth. I've been cleaning them but now feel dreadful I've not done a good enough job. He's my 2nd child and I did the same with my first and the dentist always says how clean they are. So gutted. Anyway...

What I'd really like to know is has anyone else experienced this? What happened? Did your child have the tartar on the teeth until they fell out and grew their adult teeth? I've booked him into the dentist next week but can't imagine they'll do much. I've tried rubbing it off with a washcloth - I read that it might help - but it's still there. I'm so worried he'll have it there getting worse for the next 4-5 years :(

Thank you. X

No advice, but my two year old has the same problem on her top front teeth, despite me brushing her teeth twice a day! I’ve not got round to taking her to the dentist yet but it’s on my to do list.

I'd put it at number one, if I were you! Don't leave it!

my dentist wasn’t overly concerned, but did remove it when i asked him to.

My 2 yo had this a few months ago. If you search my username you might find the thread I started about it. Our dentist removed it and it hasn't come back. He said it was probably because we had been getting her to rinse her mouth out after brushing when the toothpaste was supposed to stay on the teeth

Thanks for the replies. How did the dentist remove it? I just have visions of the dentist drill which I didn't think they'd use if they were too young. Good to know at 2 it can be removed. At least that's only one more year to wait if they can't remove from 12 mo old. X

I think my dentist “scrapled” it off but it didn’t bother her. To be fair dc was older than you’d 🙂

My dentist scraped it off with one of those pointy sticks with the curved tip ( no idea technical term!). To be honest, we had to hold DD down and it was awful but it only took about 30 secs!

Posting an update in case anyone views this thread via Google in years to come - my son is now 17months and the bright yellow tartar has gone. He's got a lot more teeth since then too and they're all fine. If I look closely at the bottom front ones where it was bad I still think they're a bit manky but the hard yellow is no longer there. He's seen the dentist twice. First time the dentist said it's rare to see what he called calculus but it's nothing to worry about. He said carry on brushing twice a day, which we've done. We went back after 3months instead of 6 and I felt there was still a bit there despite some improvement but the dentist wasn't interested. I just try to make sure we brush his teeth well. He still hates it but holding a mirror in front of him helps but often we resort to holding his arms down tactics. So in summary just regular brushing has broken it down over time :)
