Fungal nappy rash - how quickly should clotrimazole cream work?

My 6-week old baby has had a bad nappy rash for 3 weeks now. For the first 2 weeks I used metanium, but to no avail. I then got some clotrimazole cream and have been using this for 2 days now, and I'm not sure the rash is any better.

How long does the cream normally take to work? I'm applying a thin layer 3-4 times a day, and giving the baby lots of nappy-free time.

Also, the baby's poos are quite runny and she's doing lots of little ones rather than a few big ones. She's exclusively breastfed. I'm not sure if that's normal?

Thanks in advance!

You should certainly see an improvement in a couple of days. Does your baby have oral thrush too?
When mine had it I had to treat mouth, bum and nipples simultaneously to shift it, otherwise it just keeps reinfecting.

Did you get it from the doctor? If not I’d definjtelt be going to the doctors, and if you’ve already been go back!

Metanium is usually pretty effective. The poo should be runny and how often varies very much between individuals. I would just keep the nappy off as much as possible and if it's not improved in a couple of days see the GP or health visitor.

Thanks everyone. @MollyDaydream I don't think she has oral thrush. She doesn't have a particularly white mouth - there's some white but it's just milk I think. My boobs don't hurt either, which you'd get with oral thrush right?

You don't necessarily get symptoms with thrush. I didn't have any symptoms but still needed to treat both of us.

My DD has it last week round her bum. I applied the clotramazole cream at night and in the morning it looked 50% better, it was more or less gone 24 hours later. She’d been a bit run down after chicken pox, so I think her immune system took a hit.

When my DS has a yeasty rash it improved significantly within 24 hours of the anti fungal cream. He’d had it for a about a week beforehand and it was awful and raw.

I’d say if it’s not looking much better after 2 days then it’s not fungal and you need to go to the GP
