Newborn swimming query..

Hello, all. My DS is 1 month old currently, and I'd very much like to take him swimming in a few weeks time, (sometime after his vaccinations).

I am, however, struggling to find a wetsuit in a suitable size. Can anyone suggest one? I'm begrudged to buy one online without a recommendation.

I suggest the wrap rather than the wetsuit type on tiny baby as they as much easier to get on and off.

You can often find them on eBay second hand too.

Check with your pool what swim nappies they expect, lost expect double layer disposable or reusable nappy with the happy nappy (same brand as wetsuit) on top.

I've been taking my DD from 6 weeks and I got her an all in one newborn swimsuit from Primark.

Definitely go with the wrap with a swim nappy underneath. It's far easier to undo the wrap quickly than wrestle a wet suit or costume off.

Could you not just have him in the swim nappy?

Pretty chilly for such a young baby without a wetsuit/wrap.

Agree happy nappy plus a wrap is a good combination. Wetsuits are really hard to get babies into!! I would also add a disposable/reusable swim nappy under the happy nappy until they no longer poo randomly!

You don’t need to wait until after their vaccinations either.

@Daisy92 I have a Happy Nappy in the 0-4 months size that's unused because DS (8 months now) was too big for it by the time we got around to going swimming. I put the disposable nappy on him then tried to get the Happy Nappy on but it wouldn't go past his chunky wee knees Grin So it has literally never touched bare botty.

If you want it for nowt it's yours - I'm trying to get rid of stuff and it's flat so would post easily.

If you are taking him to a class check what they require, a lot will want a swim nappy plus a Happy Nappy or similar on top of that. It needs that double protection!

I think in an indoor smaller heated swimming pool that would be enough, but if it’s a big leisure pool that might be a bit colder maybe you would need some sort of top. They do Happy Nappy wetsuits as well although I never used one.

We use the splash about happy nappy wetsuit with a swim nappy underneath and get it on and off without too much difficulty. It keeps my 5 month old warm enough.

Lazypuppy · 07/06/2018 12:00

Definitely wrap and swim bappy, wrap will keep baby warmer. And it is so much easier to hold them in the pool than just in nappy as they get slippery in water!

Also, you don't have to wait until after vaccinations, i took my LO at 6 weeks for the first time
