Infacol. Reflux. Gripe water. CMPA

Morning!
Little one will be five months on Tuesday. Has severe reflux which he’s on gaviscon and omeprazole for and also cmpa which he has neocate milk.
Past few days he’s suffering with trapped wind (screaming the house down) and I don’t know why as it seems to have happened all of a sudden? I’ve done all the usual, dr browns bottles, massage, wind a few times whilst feeding etc. it’s been more difficult getting him to burp but his feeding nurse said it’s normal as he gets older.
I was seeing the doctor anyway yesterday so asked him for advice and he gave infacol. Well, I have little one the 1ml as directed by gp and he’s was so so sick! Brought his burps up lovely though. I’ve read real mixed reviews on infacol and gripe water and am unsure what to do. These burps are causing him pain but I’m struggling to get much up when winding.
Has anyone any wise words please?
Thank you! Flowers

We had this with the gaviscon. Are you using a variflow teat on the bottles with it? It is a feed thickener so baby may be having to work harder to get out out of the bottle which causes a build up of wind. Try a bigger size teat or change to variflow (I found that really helped).

Smellybears · 02/06/2018 07:50

He’s on size 2 teats, I’ll give the variflows a try. I have tried him on variflow before but too much was coming out, he’s bigger now though so might be ok with them. Just don’t understand why he’s all of a sudden suffering when normally he’s fine

Has anything changed in his diet? My duaghter was poorly like this but worse once I weaned her at 5 months. She has a dairy/proteins intolerance. Infacol worked great with my first but terrible with my second. Gripe water was a bit better but nothing changed until I saw a specialist with her at 9 months and he said straight away I think it's lactose intolerance.
Try a warm bath so little one can kick around but to be fair nothing much helped mine. She had to go on ranitidine in the end for stomach acid. I found neonate made her worse too but dietician couldn't understand why so I stopped it. Sorry for the rambling 😀

He’s had ranitidine but to no effect.
Started weaning three weeks ago and he’s been great, loves his food and I’ve noticed less sick Smile
It seems to be late afternoon and evening that is the problem.

He’s been on Gaviscon since two weeks old and has not had major problems with wind or teat size. That’s why I find it strange that this has happened suddenly.

Just tried half the dose, one dropper as advised on th box (gp said give two droppers) and he’s not been as sick and brought some burps up.
Fingers crossed it’ll sort him and he won’t be in pain

Still the king up loads! Not good. I’ve got the variflow teats so will try his next bottle with one of those

Sicking up loads not king up!

Variflow no good, making little one cough and splutter and coming out the sides of his mouth.

Have you introduced anything new into his diet this week when weaning? That might explain the sudden change?

My lo used to throw up after the gripe water but that immediately took the pain away and she settled to sleep. It just felt so cruel to give it to her!

Smellybears · 02/06/2018 15:36

No nothing new this week. I was going to try him on veg from next Tuesday as he’ll be exactly five months then but this wind has really knocked my confidence now. Really don’t know how to help him. I wind him for about 30-40 mins but he’s still being sick up until his next bottle (he’s been like this with reflux for ages) and then has a screaming fit in the afternoon and evening which I then eventually get another burp up. Feel sorry for him.

I would probably give you he gripe water a try.

Hi - I remember your threads; it’s sounds like you have had a really tough few months with your baby. I know that much of this article is relevant but the first few paragraphs are quite interesting.

themilkmeg.com/does-my-baby-have-reflux-is-it-colic-why-is-my-baby-so-gassy-and-unsettled/

I don’t know if you have seen this one either

www.babydoc.com.au/faq/colic-bore-your-baby-to-sleep/

I just thought they are quite reassuring that sometimes it is just the way babies are and by nature, we are looking for something that’s wrong.

cindersrella · 03/06/2018 12:53

Op my daughter had delayed reaction.. so she usually started flipping around the bed and screaming with gripping pains anywhere from 8pm-2am. It was usually 11pm when she was worst 😟

cindersrella · 03/06/2018 12:58

I'd try him in carrots before you go for cauliflower, cabbage, onions, broccoli as these are all gassy veg and also played havoc with my little one. Apparently they are cruciferous vegetables and make you produce a lot gas and with a sensitive guy already were a nightmare. Do you or could you keep a food chart.

We recorded our daughter when she was screaming so the docs/specialist could see her as I'm not sure they quite believe how bad she got

cindersrella · 03/06/2018 12:59

Not guy lol GUT

Smellybears · 03/06/2018 13:16

I haven’t started him on any veg as yet, I’ve bought some sweet potatoes to get him started on. I already have a diary of exactly what time and how much formula he as and porridge and baby rice too. I’ll be doing the same with veg and then fruit Smile
MrsPatrick really interesting reads there thank you, especially regarding over stimulation. I’ve told my husband about that so many times and I’m sure he thinks I’m making it up! 😂

My little one was horrendous on baby rice that's the first thing I weaned her on and she was horrific all afternoon and night. ??

Smellybears · 04/06/2018 08:22

Cindersrella thank you, he’s on baby rice in the evening so maybe that’s it? Although he’s been in it for three weeks. I’ll try I’m on sweet potato for his tea instead.

cindersrella · 05/06/2018 08:31

Good luck I hope you get him sorted. Is he under paediatric doctors?

OverTheHedgeHammy · 05/06/2018 08:37

It may be the baby rice. DS2 had terrible problems with baby rice. It expands as it moves through the digestive tract and it hurt him so so much!

Once I eliminated it there was an instant improvement, however it took nearly 3 weeks for all of the traces to leave his system and for him to be comfortable of a night.

Smellybears · 05/06/2018 09:58

He hasn’t had any baby rice for two days and only had baby porridge in the morning two days ago. His burps have been bigger and seem to be a little easier to get up but I’ve been trying a different winding technique so could be a culmination of everything that’s helped.
He hasn’t seen his paed since first being diagnosed with cmpa as she cancelled an appointment and hasn’t rearranged. He sees his feeding nurse every four weeks
