Hi all

Expecting baby no 1 in October, it's my first though hubby has an 8 year old so I know what to expect from 3 years up but clueless on babies!

What's all your must have/essential buys for a new born?
I have all the obvious things, pram/cot/bottles/a billion vests/baby grows/nappies/bibs/bouncy chair & all the clothes but anything else you didn't think of until you needed it?

Thanks in advance!

Not quite what you're asking but get the 8 year old a present from the baby for when they first meet. Congratulations Smile

I had a very leaky baby so although I had bought muslins when pregnant, we ended up buying tons more once DS arrived.
Amazon Prime is good as then you can order whatever you need to be delivered next day.
Set up online grocery shopping too.
I also found spotify premium useful - I use it for white noise and lullaby music at bedtime.

I loved my sling (I went for a buckle style) as it was easier for our lifestyle than the pram/buggy. We used it for dog walking (meant we could go on rougher terrain) almost daily and dd slept in it much better than the pram. It was also good exercise carrying her. Really handy to throw in the car when going to shops ect rather than taking up the whole boot with the pram and amazing on holiday (though we didn’t dare not take the pram too! But certainly used the sling more)

Mixed reviews on this but I couldn’t live without my Tommie tippie perfect prep or breast pump

Learning from experience of massive DS2, buy some clothes in 3 - 6 months. Also, buy some playsuits, as we had a heatwave the October after he was born, and the shops had stopped selling them, so I was trying to squeeze a 2 month old into playsuits that were too small when he was born.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 01/06/2018 14:55

Re Spotify, we have the SleepySounds app, which DS2 still likes at 6!

PaddyF0dder · 01/06/2018 14:55

More muslins than you think you’ll need. Too many muslins.

If you’re formula feeding, get the Perfect Prep machine.

PaddyF0dder · 01/06/2018 14:57

Don’t bother with fancy clothes until maybe 3 months old at least. They just live in vests and baby grows.

Look into swaddle shells. Good for sleeping in until they’re (I think) 6 weeks old. Then move them into grobags.

FairfaxAikman · 01/06/2018 15:02

Three times as many Muslims as you think you'll need
A bath angel support - 4 week old DS prefers this to a traditional baby bath
Sock ons

Not essential but I love my Milton mini steriliser - I use nipple shields and they are great for when I can't wash them fully. I rise with bottled water and pop in the steriliser.

FairfaxAikman · 01/06/2018 15:03

Argh autocorrect- muslins!

Narya · 01/06/2018 15:05

Amazon prime
Grosnug sleeping bags
Tuppence and Crumble star wrap
Travel mug - for you, so your hot drinks stay hot

SnowGoArea · 01/06/2018 15:08

Not just regular muslins, but the giant 1m square muslins. I got mine on Amazon and they are so much more useful than the small ones.

unicornchaser · 01/06/2018 16:03

Thanks, for all the suggestions so far, making a list and added a tonne of muslins!
A friend suggested the perfect prep, hadn't thought it necessary until she mentioned the 2am feeding and not wanting/having the time to wait for a kettle to boil etc! So now on the list too!

What's the difference between a gro smug & the sleep bags you can get? Are they just more designed for younger babies? Will look into them & the shells also suggested.

I will defo be getting an insulated mug too, pram has a mug holder (not the only reason for choosing that one but it's up there!)

Good shout on the present for brother from baby. It's also his 9th birthday 10 days before so can incorporate that too Smile

The love to dream Swaddle Up grobags are good when they are too small for a proper sleep bag. They hold the hands in a natural position by the head.

A gro bag is small and snug, whereas sleeping bags are a lot roomier. Our baby didn't get on with gro bags, found them too restrictive, so not all babies like them.

Also need metanium (better than sudacrem) for nappy rash, and nappy pail or bin for nappy disposal, and wet bag for disposal when you're out and about (if using reusables).

Little nail clippers.

For the early days, if breastfeeding, nipple shields could be handy to give the poor things a break. Some mums also like lanolin cream for sore nipples but it didn't do much for me.

Congratulations! It's a wonderful time.

Rebecca2089 · 02/06/2018 15:38

Congratulations! We have a 8 day old...

I'd say having a changing mat both upstairs and downstairs is useful, sounds silly but we also realized we hadn't got a sun parasol until we went out and the weather was really hot, also suncream.

A Jumparoo, from about 5 months. They are absolutely brilliant!

More Muslins then you can imagine.

Baby grows with built in scratch mits

Ewan the dream sheep/Ollie the owl

Perfect prep machine - an absolute must!!!!

Bouncy chair, baby gym or baby swing are useful to put them down on and might give you 20 minutes without a baby on you.

Cellular blankets for a summer baby, they are cool.

Microwave steriliser

unicornchaser · 03/06/2018 19:56

Thanks! Got a bunch of stuff from a jack & Jill market yesterday 😊 bouncer chair, travel cot to use as a living room dog free safe zone! A tonne of bibs, sleep suits, a snow suit & Moses basket sheets.
I got the tommee tippee closer to nature bottle feed set in the mothercare sale & will get the perfect prep machine and know what pram/car seat we are getting.

Friends are lending us a Moses basket and couple of the gro bags.
Think furniture & changing tables and we will be largely set with essentials 😊

Baby isn't due until October so still got plenty of time!

A baby caddie for keeping downstairs or moving around the house with nappies wipes etc stored in it. We have changing unit in nursery but after giving birth this was a godsend to keep downstairs with a spare changing mat. We actually ended up moving it to the bedroom at night to save getting up and moving to the nursery for nappy changes.

Long shoehorn so you can slip on shoes without bending. Useful during mid/late pregnancy as well as after - my DH loves the minimum effort and uses mine too 😊

Bobbiepin · 05/06/2018 23:50

A bottle like this to store hot water when you go out to make up formula bottles. I had the giant tommee Tippee one but this holds more water, keeps it hot longer and is smaller & lighter.
