Choosing a cot - drop side or fixed side?

I had thought a drop side sounded much easier but then read safety concerns (albeit seeming to refer to American designs rather than European)

For our two month old so I am guessing different base heights are important for picking up and putting down (no doubt numerous times!) ?

Thank you!

Fixed side..
Reading about drop side scared me, didn't think they still sold them.
Ours from IKEA has a moveable base so you can have it higher and drop the base when LOs older!

I couldn't have managed without my dropside...

Once the base was at the lowest I couldn't reach to pick up or lay down my DD and once I got pregnant not a chance!!

Drop sides are only banned in the US, I can't see how they would be unsafe personally.

I had thought that as asked DH how I would reach DC on bottom base and he painted a beautiful picture of her standing by that age and reaching her arms up to be picked up by mummy... on the way home from the cot shop I realised how naive that was and that some days she will probably be lying like a plank refusing to be moved (hope to be proved wrong!)

After emcs there’s no way I could’ve put down/picked up dd without the drop side.

It’s important to make sure the cot is properly assembled and I’d never have used a soft/fabric side drop cot.

Suppose it depends what height you are. Im 5'9 so didnt need it with first two. Got one with third as id had bad spd and sciatica and the bloody thing broke after a couple of months.

Drop sides can be handy if you want to side car the cot to your bed at some point. However, I had a drop side and it was so fiddly I never used it, and definitely wouldn't have been able to with one hand (ie holding baby with the other).

I didn't think you could even buy drop side.

The cot we have which both kiddies used (and daughter at nearly two is still using) has fixed sides but you an lower the base.

When she was younger and could stand / pull herself up I had the base on the highest setting so easy to get in / out.

Once they can pull themselves up I lowered it and they would usually be standing when you go to lift them out.

I'm 5ft 6in and never had any difficulty.

Have experience of both as we had a drop-side and my dparents have a fixed side for when we stay. The drop-side only went down a few inches but that really made a difference to my back when laying a sleepy, heavy young toddler down at the very bottom!

I'm 5'2 and really struggle with putting DS down when he's asleep in our fixed sided cot.

CurlsLDN · 30/05/2018 09:00

I had an IKEA cot like pp.

The base could be lowered, then once LO was big enough the side could be permanently and safely removed to make a low first bed (still cot sized) think it's called sundvig.

It was brilliant. In my experience most baby/toddlers don't lie down and refuse to get up,quite the opposite, think you're thinking of 15 year olds!

arbrighton · 30/05/2018 10:12

It's killing my back lifting 11kg, non standing DS from bottom base but he can pull up to kneeling so we couldn't risk it any longer.

THe wakeups might reduce soon

Yeah I'm short and had 3 huge 98th centile babies in 3 years - not a good combination!!! Emptying a large supermarket trolley as soon as I was pregnant was also difficult Grin

We had a one handed drop sided mothercare cot it was incredibly sturdy you had to lean against the side and lift up then down the dropside I can imagine other designs not being as safe tbh...

We also took the side off and used it as a "bed"
