Lego storage ideas!

So my DS1 age 4 has recently got into lego... which is great but he's only got a few sets so far and it's already everywhere! He likes to build it and then half take it apparent whilst playing so I have several half build items with loads of random bricks all over the sideboard and dining table at the moment.

It's already frustrating me and I know we will have years of this, and a lot more lego to come!

I also have DS2, who is only 3 months old now but I want to make sure I have a solution in place before he's moving so it's safe.

Any ideas or suggestions on storage would be appreciated. For little bits, build items, keeping sets separated etc. How do you do it, what do you use??

Thanks!

Have you got Pinterest? There's loads of ideas on there to do with lego storage.

Kids play with Lego in different ways so what storage you need depends on how they play. Some kids (or parents!) like to keep the sets completely separate, only build the models according to the instructions and then play with the finished models. Big Ziploc bags or plastic drawers might work for keeping stuff separate.

Other kids build once then break it up and add the pieces to a huge collection and create their own models and designs.
I try to encourage the second kind of Lego play!!! The best way of storing Lego that I've found is a big circular drawstring mat, all the bricks are contained on the mat, it's easier to rummage around to find bricks and you just draw up the string to tidy up.

At that age we had the circular drawstring mat, too.
When finished the constructions would go on a shelf and the rest would be contained in the string bag.

Later - DS is a second type player - we had Trofast units.

And now DS (15) has Kallax with glass doors (bc. the cat) and lots of drawer units for people, hinges, flats, etc. and a ring binders for instructions.

These are great tables for playing in, keeping Lego off the floor and away from LO.

Ah - totally feel your pain! I LOVE Lego and think it's one of the best toys ever. BUT it is a real pain to find the right storage.

As above, it does depend on how you want to play with it. I did try to keep all the sets separate for a while, but soon lost that battle and now it's all together. We have a Stuffel bag, ( www.stuffel.co.uk ) which is the drawstring bag mentioned above. It's brilliant because the kids can open it right out to find the pieces they need, and then you just scoop it up when they're done. We have a couple of big ones for in the house and the small one is really good for taking bits of Lego (or other toys) out with you.

We also have a Kallax IKEA storage unit which we have boxes of Lego in. But these still need to be tipped out into something to play with - which is where the bag/playmats are so good.

You could also use a sheet or duvet to tip the boxes into and then tip them back at the end of play. A cheaper option, but not as pretty!

Good luck! If your DS is only 4 you have many years of Lego playing still ahead of you. I hope you find a solution which works for you.

Ooh - that IKEA table does look good. I think it's really nice for the kids to have somewhere where they can keep a few lego creations made up too. That looks really useful.
