Newborn breath stinks

DS is four weeks old.
He is BF and was given infacol because he wasn't burping properly (needing to but couldn't). He reacted badly to it - farting non stop and began projectile vomiting.
Doctor prescribed ranitidine and also diagnosed baby acne.

Three days on and I've noticed that DSs breath stinks. It's like curdled milk. He's also screaming the house down for hours at a time, fussing at the breast (not latching/coming off frequently ) and can be sick more than an hour after feeding. Also the acne seems worse.
Help!

It might be worth considering a milk allergy, it’s unusual in breast fed babies but it can happen. Would it be a big problem for you to try a dairy free diet for a few weeks?

It could be oral thrush - my DS stank when he got it.

Onions in your diet could cause problems too

Hmmmm
Newborns babies generally can be a bit whiffy. Objectively I knew my newborn babies poos were very off putting and breath sometimes smelly, but weirdly I LOVED the smell. I’d actually inhale when he exhaled!

All the symptoms together do sound suspicious of a dairy intolerance (and poss other intolerances....). If this is the case, no amount of Ranitidine is gojng to eliminate the symptoms. I would be looking to go dairy free for at least a month and then see.

Poor little thing. Hope it resolves soon.

I should say that the smelly breath is a very new thing.

The roof of his mouth is white at the sides. Could be oral thrush like pp suggested? I've been on antibiotics which could have caused it.

If it is thrush, it’s usually quite patchy, and some of it will rub away, leaving red patches.

It’s not usually associated with a curdled milk smell, however reflux definitely is. Infacol doesn’t have much evidence behind it, other than parents feeling better to be doing something (a placebo effect). Onions are highly unlikely to have this effect.

A Cows Milk Protein Allergy is certainly possible, usually diagnosed via an exclusion diet for mum, it can take a few weeks to clear the dairy in your system though, so it’s a bit of a pain finding out.

The most obvious explanation for the symptoms is reflux - the Kellymom website has a lot of evidence based information on it.
If you feel medication is making it worse, a trip back to the doctor is in order.

It sounds like you’re having a really rough time just now - poor thing. It will pass eventually Flowers

My DS was just like this. Intolerant of dairy protein reflux and oral thrush. That plaques of white look like oral thrush to me and yes, my DS got it after I had antibiotics for an infected c section scar. It was a miserable time, I hope you have support OP. Flowers

Sounds like thrush ask your doc for gentian violet or anti fungal treatment
