Can MN help?

I won't be able to - but DH might?

Busybean · 18/05/2007 21:46

ok heres Qs

Describe the ultrasructure of skeletal muscle and explain how it relates to function.

Explain the role of actin and myosin during the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction.

Relate the structure of the neuromuscular junction to its function.

Describe the gross structure of the nervous system.

Describe the structure and functions of neurones.

Describe the nature of a simple nerve impluse and transmission of a nerve impulse accross a synapse.

Explain the functional significance of synapses.

Explain the mechanisms by which transmission may e affected clinically and pathologically.

Doesn't look that impossible.
Nowt that a good basic biology text book can't tell you surely?

Malaleche · 18/05/2007 21:51

sorry to hijack but MOONDOG could you please explain why you think Alfie Kohn is a charlatan? Thanks. have been trying to catch up with you for a week...

fransmom · 18/05/2007 21:52

doesn't the gross structure of the nervous system comprise of the cns (central nervous system - brain and spinal cord) and pns (the peripheral nervous system - not sure on that one!)?

I'm too tired to do links but here goes

Hmm, well, i have two here(books), but the thing is i read and read but it doesnt seem to make any sense

I did this as part of my degree but couldn't answer it in any detail as would need a text book to jog my memory as its quite detailed. What I have done is given you a (very basic!)idea of what I think they are looking for where I can - hth! It is Friday night and I'm tired so bear that in mind

Describe the ultrasructure of skeletal muscle and explain how it relates to function. - think along lines of the muscle attached to the skeleton and how it enables the skeleton to move - give examples - ie lifting, bending etc

Explain the role of actin and myosin during the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction. - google sliding filament theory and that will help

Relate the structure of the neuromuscular junction to its function - look up this on google and then give an example of a function and relate how it works with respect to function

Describe the gross structure of the nervous system - text book?

Describe the structure and functions of neurones - text book?

Describe the nature of a simple nerve impluse and transmission of a nerve impulse accross a synapse. - looking along the lines of the myelin sheath, nodes of ranvier, impulses jumping from node to node to enable transmission and if it requires more detail, you need to go into the electrical aspect of it - ie Potassium, chloride shift etc

Explain the functional significance of synapses - nodes of ranvier - enable the impulses to jump from node to node, which enables the impules to travel much faster etc

Explain the mechanisms by which transmission may e affected clinically and pathologically. - go into diseases and physiologically causes which would affect nerve/muscle transmission

Busybean · 18/05/2007 21:55

Thanks for the links

Hi Mal.
I have Punished by rewards by my bed to read.Am shortly to embark on essay based on quote from his book for my MSc in Applied Behaviour Analysis.

Charlatan is too strong a word in all honesty. However his problem is that he doesn't understand the principles of Behaviourism and confuses the terms 'rewards' and 'reinforcers' which mean two very different things (as is evident to anyone with basic understanding of ABA)

It will be interesting to read his book though.

As a salt specialising in complex learning disabilities and communication disorders (stuff like Autism) I would add that I think what one might term 'reward systems' are overused with the neurologically typical population and sadly underused with the population I work with when in fact they can be life changing.

Malaleche · 18/05/2007 22:18

uh, right, thanks [wishes i was brighter]

Malaleche · 18/05/2007 22:18

p.s. it was you who used the word charlatan btw

Alfie Kohn is a complete charlatan who misunderstands human nature btw.

So you're saying he's just a bit misguided then? Is it ok for me to finish his book then?

moondog · 19/05/2007 00:12

Yes,I know twas me and in retrospect a tad unfair.
Sorry 'bout that Alfie me old mucker.

NikkiBFG · 20/05/2007 19:32

Busybean - hows it going with assignment?

Busybean · 20/05/2007 23:33

Getting there slowly...I think
