Can we go to a farm?

I have a 3 week old and my family are visiting us this weekend for the BH, I have two nieces who are desperate to go to the farm but I’m concerned that I won’t be able to take my son in as he hasn’t had any injections. He obviously won’t come out of the pram but still concerned. Does anyone know if it’s safe or not? Am I being a bit paranoid? I’d love to take the girls though!

You're being paranoid. Unless you plan on rubbing your newborn on a cow I'm sure they'll be fine. Just be sure that everybody washes their hands before touching the baby.

EssentialHummus · 23/05/2018 17:26

It's probably fine but I share your reservations and likely wouldn't. Can family and nieces wander round without you, then meet you after?

MyDcAreMarvel · 23/05/2018 17:26

He is a human, not a dog you can take him out. Enjoy the farm.

It’s fine Smile.

If you are breast feeding he has your antibodies. What do you think he might catch? Vaccinations are for human diseases not animal ones. Enjoy the farm & make sure everyone washes their hands.

Thanks all! Definitely paranoid parent

I took my ds to a wildlife park a couple of weeks ago who was less than 2 weeks old at the time...I didn't even think about it.

It's normal to have these concerns, especially if it's your first pfb...but I would go and enjoy your day, baby will be fine!

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 23/05/2018 17:42

I can't think of any reason why not. I raised 2 dc's on a farm without any problems.

BellyBean · 23/05/2018 23:10

There's nothing he's going to be vaccinated against on a farm. Washing hands is standard for farms and the same whatever the age of person.

IrregularCommentary · 23/05/2018 23:30

He's not a puppy! Enjoy your farm trip.

Just a question from a paranoid first time parent, I can laugh at myself but please don’t imply that I see my son as a dog, I find that going too far. Thanks all for the sound advice. Still navigating the world of parenthood, I’m only 3 weeks in remember!

There have been several outbreaks of vaccine preventable infections diseases recently. The animals will have been touched by alot of kids and could carry them without any symptoms. I personally would stay away

I live on a farm, cows, sheep, horses, goats, chickens and a dog. My dc came back from the hospital into the midst of it all without any problems. All farm kids do.

I grew up on a farm and was a spectacularly healthy child despite being a little grotbag with an aversion to actually washing my hands. I now have a baby of my own and took her out to see the sheep and lambs at less than a week old. Just exercise good hygiene - wash your hands before touching her if you touch any animals or fences and check the wheels of your pram for poo.

MrsJonSno · 28/05/2018 10:24

She didn’t say he was a dog, she said the exact opposite.

Skittlesandbeer · 28/05/2018 10:28

Bring a bumper squirt pack of sanitiser for the relative’s hands.

And remember that throughout human history, more kids have lived on farms than not.

If I were you, I’d be more worried about how ‘not much fun’ the day trip will be for you- juggling nappies, feeds, boobs, etc. I’d be cheerfully waving them all off and enjoying some calm newborn time alone. But you sound braver than me!

OneForTheRoadThen · 28/05/2018 10:39

I took my 5 week old to the farm last week for my toddler's birthday - never occurred to me not to. Is there a danger then?

Do you have a sling, they might be more protected in there.

Aw12345 · 28/05/2018 17:55

Furrycushion actually a lot of human disease come from animals... e.coli, salmonella, Toxoplasma, campylobacter etc all normal on a farm and cause disease in people.

Not saying OP shouldn't take newborn to farm but I'm just saying she has genuine concerns.

mum2bemay22 · 28/05/2018 18:45

We did go into the farm briefly but I did not take the pram into the actual animal sections I waited outside them and wondered only on the paths. It was a lovely outing and baby was fine ☺️
