Can someone tell me the best way to hold/help a little boy - so they he can pee outside??

I wonder if someone experienced can advise me.
I was out for a walk with my little boy (2.5) when he said he needed 'potty peep'.
We were in backstreet, with no portable potty or public loo anywhere nearby, so I thought, 'fine, he will have to pee in the gutter here' so I pulled down his trousers to his knee and kind of pointed his peepee (our name) towards the gutter. Everything was OK, until he was finishing, and the flow kind of ebbed and ended up dripping down onto his trousers. It was a bit of a mess. He ended up with a big wet patch on his crotch and he kept mentioning peep as we walked along after.
I have seen people hold little kids in a sitting position over the gutter, and wondered should I do this with him.
Or just carry a big wad of loo paper in my pocket to try to catch all the drips.
he eventually peeped into the gutter.
How do you stop little boys dribbling on themselves without completely removing their trousers (DP's suggestion)?
Anyone?

I previewed the conversation, but not the title. Doh!
Of course I meant to type 'that' not 'they'. [rolls eyes]

Lean him forwards and get him to point his willy and shake it a few times for the stop start dribbles. This is what I did with ds but soemtimes we had wet shoes from the puddle. It gets better as they get older thankfully.

I used to get the DSs (on the odd occasion they would wee outside - very shy!) to lean forward onto my arm, so their feet were a good foot or so behind their hips. that way when it all dribbles at the end it misses their trousers and shoes.

With DD I get her to sit on my left arm, which I then scoot down so it's under her knees and she can then wee safely without sprinkling her trousers and shoes (which we did first time she got caught short)

It is hard though, but it gets better with practice.

I will bear in mind the walls thing. The only walls around where I was, were the walls of occupied buildings, and it was broad daylight.
I just didn't fancy that.
Next time I'll look for another, less contentious, wall. I've just thought of a lamp post, but that's a bit silly.

I'm glad to hear it improves. He doesn't hold it himself really, just kind of stands. He has mainly been sitting down on the potty until recently, so it's all new for him.
Is is mainly girls that you scoop up then?

I used to rest ds against my knee , forcing his hips forward . Do make sure you aim downwind and down hill !

RedLorryYellowLorry · 18/05/2007 11:12

Ds spent most of last summer weeing into my lilac bushes Apparetly "daddy said I could". This year he can wee pretty accurately for outside wees without being held. That is unless he is distracted and turns around to see where the noise is coming from

clumsymum · 18/05/2007 11:29

When my ds was this age he sat on his potty to pee, so if he needed a pee while out, I would pull down his trews and then stand behind him, with my arms under his armpits, so he could bend his knees and assume a sitting position. The wee then just trickles down beneath him, missing his trousers.

This seemed to work perfectly well, and he can now (age 7) happily pee standing up tho I still encourage sitting on the loo at home, much cleaner.

maisiemog · 18/05/2007 12:02

LOL Red Lorry! They are funny! I can just imagine him turning round.
Nooo!! Too late!
I will have to see how he responds to the under the armpits Clumsymum. He can be a bit unpredictable about his likes and dislikes. I suppose that's the way of being 2.5 (or 32.5)

I always hold my ds horizontal, pointing down, then there's no way the wee can get to his clothes.

nappyzone · 18/05/2007 19:00

i like this thread! i have a dd whos4 and now a baby ds - 6 months and never thought about the logistics of boy peeing ! oh i have it all to come!

annobal · 18/05/2007 19:06

I normally put my knee into DS2s back/bottom so he has to lean forward and put my finger under his willy so it doesn't dribble at the end - definitely gets easier as they get older - DS1 will take himself off and wee against a tree

fruitful · 18/05/2007 19:13

ROFL! Dd was most upset last summer in the park when the two little boys she was playing with went off and peed against a tree. She kept saying "I want to do that" and was most aggrieved when I said she didn't have the equipment.

I have a ds that I'm thinking about potty training so this is most interesting. I was going to just carry a small empty plastic bottle with me though... then I could tip it into a drain, couldn't I? Is this a bad plan for some reason I haven't thought of?

nappyzone · 18/05/2007 21:56

i love this thread ! rofl!

blodwen · 18/05/2007 22:04

When my ds was little, I did what annobal is suggesting... (except it was a screw top plastic gravy granules jar! What a memory! He's 21 now!) It was very easy and discreet.

colditz · 18/05/2007 22:10

Find a low wall, and sit him on it at the back of his knees, with his bum hanging off. Like being on a loo.

onlygirlinthehouse · 18/05/2007 22:18

I do what annobal suggests. A knee in the small of the back makes them stick there hips forward and then just put your finger under their willy at the end to 'shake the drips off' (thats what we say in our house anyway). Pretty fool proof when you get the hang of it.

A screw top bottle is great for car journey though, they can stick it in so no spillages! we were once stuck in bank holiday traffic for 5 hours and dh and 3ds almost filled litre water bottle. I just had to hold on of course!

macmama73 · 18/05/2007 22:37

lol, great thread.

some good ideas for when my DS gets to this stage. (sooner rather than later I hope)

Off to check the cellar for gravy granule jars

moopymoo · 18/05/2007 22:41

my ds 2.5 is told to put fire out like fireman sam, so he holds it and aims. this is backfiring a bit though as he is a little too keen to wee everywhere pants dry though!

maisiemog · 19/05/2007 08:45

LOL! Fireman Sam! I love it. I'm sure my LO would totally respond to that. 'Put out the fire darling!'
There's a lot of useful stuff here. Thank you!!
I'll report back when I try a few of the techniques - see what works for us.
I have heard of the bottle as well, I think they use it in EC sometimes. So that's definitely going to be implemented. The only fear I have is finding a week old bottle of wee in the bottom of my very large bag,if I forget to empty it.
Hmm! That would work in a cinema or theatre as well wouldn't it, and more discreet than a big old potty. [thoughtful face]

I just wanted to report that so far I have tried the 'knee in the back' technique (and so has DP) and it worked pretty well in terms of spillage.
The only problem was I found it a bit difficult, ergonomically. I thought I was going to lose my balance. He's a bit of a shortie boy.
Have to work on that.
I might try the 'hanging/leaning forward' technique next, see how we go.
Apparently, today DP and his dad took DS for lunch and DS tried to do pee in an empty toybox in the play area, so he's definitely getting the hang of all the standing up, outside stuff.

onlygirlinthehouse · 20/05/2007 23:47

you will get the hang of it and so will he. Now I have to stop the kids peeing in the grid in the garden instead of using the loo, the neighbours hate us enough already!

Skribble · 21/05/2007 00:13

Am I the only one that lifted him up holding his knees so his bum and willy dangle, similar position to girls, only while very small and no good at standing up pees.

Maybe I should have tried this
