Help- DS holding on to poo!

My DS is 2.7months and has recently started holding on to his poo! He will ly or sit down to stop it coming out. or hold his bottom. He is not toliet trained yet , I had hoped to start this summer! Ho hum!

We went on holiday and unfortuneately he became a bit constipated, I think this has affected him. I have tried to encourage him that pooing is a good thing. Any advice welcome!

Another vote for lactulose. Our ds got a bit constipated a couple of months ago and started to hold them in because it was hurting him. Gave him lactulose, plenty of fluids (we used diluted fruit juice) and fruit (fresh and dried, but avoid bananas as they are supposed to be constipating). Luckily for us, the problem sorted itself out as soon as his poos got a bit softer and it stopped hurting him. If you can act fast hopefully it won't become an ongoing problem.

Yorkiegirl and ginger nut, thank you both for your advice. I'm presuming Lactulose is a laxative? It's just that he seems to have got very good at holding it in and when he does poo, its not as though the poo is that hard. But yes maybe it's a bit uncomfortable for him, so thanks again, your advice is most welcome.

paradise, with my ds his problem persisted even after he was no longer constipated. I think he was holding it in because he remembered that it could be uncomfortable. After a few days on lactulose it just seemed to resolve itself (and my personal experience with lactulose is that it can make things start moving to such an extent that you really HAVE to go, and then it is so soft it is really easy, IYSWIM. Sorry if TMI!!).

I had probelms with dd not pooing for weeks and weeks. Was prescribed lactulose - did nothing, then given sennakot - didn't do much. THen had to give both sennakot and lactulose at the same time. which seemed to work but then she returned having really, really hard poo. Hospital carried out a bowel biospy and found a crack in her bowel which was causing her to hold it in because it hurt for her to go. THey cut that part of the bowel away and that night she was pooing as normal even with all the stitches in. Touch wood she's been fine since and that was all done back in April. Back at hospital in Nov and hoping they'll discharge her. I think I had an extreame case though. All my friends with constipatedf kids swear by latulose, as far as |I know it's a sugar and water type solution that just softens the poo.

This must have been rather traumatic for you all.
How long had the problem exsisted?? How did your child cope with all the tests etc, we have just had our wee girl in hospital and found it all very hard going with catherters etc, they never did manage to insert it, cruel.
