Newborn head flopped forwards!

PossibiliTea · 20/05/2018 20:19

I feel like a shit mum and general person!

Winding LO and moved her into the position where she would sort of be sat on my knee and her head went forwards before my hand could get to her chin!

She went backwards normally I think it was just the flopping forwards I’m worried about it was like her chin went straight to her chest

I’ve fed her since and she’s alert, awake (and crying!!) at the moment just about settling down now.

Should I be calling for any advice on this do you think? Has this happened to anyone before and it’s been ok?

Everyone has a moment where baby's head flops (or they lurch sideways as you go through a doorway)

Or the first time you realise they're able to get off your bed, and did it head first

Or when you think they're ok at sitting up and get distracted and just fall over sideways

pastabest · 20/05/2018 20:52

She will be absolutely fine.

I hate to scare you but much much worse things are going to happen to her on your watch and I promise you will hopefully look back on this very soon and laugh and feel a little silly.

How are you doing in general? Although it's really normal to feel guilty about these things you sound very worried, any chance you are feeling a bit anxious/down in general?

PossibiliTea · 20/05/2018 20:52

Blush yep I’m learning that fast! So I’m assuming she’s ok, she’s just got manic hiccups at the moment!

By worse things I mean:

She will fall off the bed/sofa at some point. However much you think 'I would never let that happen' it will.

You will whack her head going through a doorway at some point

You will drop something on her face at some point. Most people drop phones. I dropped frozen sausages.

You will probably accidentally clip a little bit of finger/toe when you are cutting her nails at some point.

The above things happen to EVERYONE

There's lots of other random things you will also do unique to you and your baby Grin

PossibiliTea · 20/05/2018 21:02

I’m not feeling anxious or worried in general I just know people have drilled into me how sensitive a baby’s brain is in their skull and their bones aren’t properly formed and stuff haha!

Maybe I shouldn’t come rushing to MN and trust my instinct that she is fine and I better get used to these things happening all the time Gin

"You will whack her head going through a doorway at some point"
Oh, I thought that was just us! (Both DCs Blush)

We've done all the others too. I just thought we were extra-negligent for that one!

Keep going OP, you're doing great, I promise!

WhatisaNarwhal · 20/05/2018 21:04

Yes. It happened a few times. I googled a lot. Baby is now 2 and seems undamaged Grin

Here are some of the other things I did in her first 6 months -

Dropped phone on her head. Twice in an
hour. The second time I was googling “phone dropped in baby’s head” Blush

Whacked her head off the lintel of the door (living on a boat at the time. Low doorways)

Got her hand tangled in my necklace, didn’t realise, pulled away and almost pulled her arm off (haven’t worn a necklace since!)

Was putting her in the crib and she slipped out of my arm and fell in like a flipping pancake Confused

Bumped her head MANY more times than I can admit, on the edge of the train table while breastfeeding her and travelling up and down between London and Edinburgh (those tables are not really far enough away from the chairs!)

Clipped her skin into the neck poppers of her vest

And many many more besides .

She’s fine. Honestly. And now damages herself much more often than I ever did- she’s a kamikaze kid!

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 20/05/2018 21:05

She will be fine, I remember when going for the four month vaccines, I was rushing out the door and whacked the baby's head🙈Went to the app with a big bruise on her head, I was devastated at the time!

AnnUnderTheFryingPan · 20/05/2018 21:09

Putting the car seat in the car. Forgetting to put the seat belt round and driving off.

Putting baby in the car seat. Picking car seat up be handle. Handle not locked and tipping baby onto hard tiled floor.

Both practically men now. Seem to be ok.

My dd is 8 months old
So far I dropped a phone on her head
Turned round to get something and she fell off the sofa
Banged her head on a radiator
Almost dropped her when i was carrying her to the car. On concrete
Spilt a bottle of water all over her (cold thankfully)
Elbowed her in the face. Dp was trying to pass her to me while I was in bed. I got up to get her and misjudged how close to me she was Blush

mildshock · 20/05/2018 21:15

My 8 month old currently has a bruise on his head. DS1dropped a toy car on him. He also fell off the sofa when DP forgot he had just started rolling.

I've dropped my phone on his face while feeding him a few times more than I'd like to admit Blush

DS1 also went to nursery with a black eye twice! He tripped and landed on the corner of his little chair once, and the other time he bounced a ball too hard and it hit his face.
I've also let him fall off the bed, stood on his hand, elbowed him, of course all accidentally.

You'll get used to the little accidents, they happen, and worrying about them just means you're a better parent than you think.

Dropped phone on her head. Twice in an
hour. The second time I was googling “phone dropped in baby’s head”

This epitomises the baby days for me for so many reasons Grin

mildshock · 20/05/2018 21:17

The worst was when DP picked up DS2 from our bed after changing his clothes, but didn't realise his arm was wrapped in our blanket.

He had pulled elbow (sort of a partial dislocation) and we had a visit to a&e, where the nurse popped it back into place.

DP still feels guilty and that was several months ago.

BoiledFrog · 20/05/2018 21:40

Done most of the above, twatted babies head off door/car frames, they roll unexpectedly off the bed etc. Also ds1 about 18 months tripped and split his chin open on a coffee table, I called an ambulance Blush pretty ashamed of that, but tbf I was in a panic. When same ds split his eyebrow open to the bone, I did the more sensible thing and called a taxi to the hospital.

Also when ds2 managed to break his leg on his first birthday, called a taxi as it wasn't urgent (that one was a right pita with constant retelling of how it happened, I get child protection procedures, but what a palaver)

PossibiliTea · 20/05/2018 21:40

Thank you all! Honestly. And I pissed myself because I’ve done a fair few of these already! We have a book where we keep track of her feeds and I dropped it on her (legs thank god)

My friend only realised her baby could crawl when she heard him rolling down the stairs, baby's are very robust. Theyre always the last ones out alive after earthquakes.

pastabest · 20/05/2018 22:10

Um OP I think your book tracking feeds might also be one of those things much like 'head flop worry' that you will end up filing under 'things I definitely won't do with DC2' Grin

PossibiliTea · 21/05/2018 00:35

Oh no don’t worry it was just while we were in hospital she was struggling so we had to keep note

AiredaleFan · 21/05/2018 01:03

I trapped my 12 month old daughters fingers in the washing machine door. Ironically I was closing it so she wouldn't trap her fingers, I just failed to remove them first.

moita · 21/05/2018 12:41

My DP let ds's head flop forward the first time we bathed him. Dp was distraught!

Babies are more robust than we give them credit for - thank god as I know I've had some careless moments.

PossibiliTea · 21/05/2018 14:07

I told dp I’d done this... and his response was oh yeah she will be fine She’s done that a few times with me...!!!
