I know it's just chickenpox but my poor little 18 month old has come down with it, and quite badly.

We've done the usual, Calpol, anti histamine and calamine lotion but wonder if there's anything else that you've tried that helps? Thanks in advance!

Don't use calamine lotion, it dries them out and makes them itch more.

Virasoothe was food, baths with bicarb, we found the menthol version of aveno very soothing too. DD got loads in her mouth and could only have smoothies, yogurts and ice lollies.

Calamine is horrible- dries and makes it more itchy.
Bi carb in a warm bath is soothing.
I'm not sure if your DC is too young for Piriton syrup? Check with the pharmacy to see if there is an antihistamine suitable for their age.

Definitely not calamine

Get Aveeno with the colloidal (sp) oatmeal.

Old sock/pair of tights filled with oats run under the tap in the bath.

Thanks all. Just got some aveeno and she has an anti histamine suitable for her age. Fingers crossed these help!

I found calamine-aqueous cream to be much better and easier to apply than the runny stuff in bottles. You can ask for it in chemists.

Baking soda in the bath really helped my little ones when they had it. Frequent bathing helped too. I also used some Aveeno bath oil!

You can also buy gels specifically made for chicken pox at the chemist! I think we used virasoothe!

Get a mousse called poxclin from boots. Super easy to apply and really soothing and healing.

I never heard of giving an antihistamine for chicken pox? It will pass soon. Just try your best to keep dc happy with tv and iPad while they are miserable. My dc had chicken pox age 12 months and 2 years and all they could do was sit and watch shows covered in spots with fever. But luckily no itching. Just misery and tiredness.

jimijack · 17/05/2018 21:05

Showers, loads of them, or baths, 5 a day if needed! It's so soothing.

KitKatCHA · 17/05/2018 21:12

Virasoothe (sp?) was amazing, mine said it stopped them itching so much. I think it helped them not to scar too. Keep dosed up on calpol, absolutely no ibuprofen though.

QuietFin · 17/05/2018 21:28

We put porridge oats in the bath (put the oats in some tights so no mess!) this worked well along with poxclin! Sounds mad but it works!

doodlejump1980 · 17/05/2018 21:32

Another vote for Virasoothe here. Our twins had it one after the other. Not one scar on either of them. Apparently calamine is quite old-fashioned, yes it dries up the spots, but it makes them more itchy and more likely to scar. Virasoothe all the way! Hope they get better soon Flowers

On the way to get Virasoothe. Thanks everyone
