Vaccine concern

Hello MNs

Just a quickie - and I will say from the off I am not anti-vax.

My DS is overdue his second round of 6 in 1 and Rotarix.
There was an appointment scheduled today which I cancelled for following reason -
The surgery told me they’d had ‘problems with the fridges’ where vaccines are stored over the weekend. I was advised to ‘check with reception’ that the problem was resolved.
I did, and was assured it was (solved).
However it’s triggered a real worry that the vaccines my DS is due might have been compromised somehow. I would like to feel confident that they would’ve destroyed any that weren’t kept at required temperature while fridges were problematic, but I’m not (I’m a sceptic).

Dilemma I have now is that DS still needs his jabs.
And any batch affected by fridge probs may stick around for a while (I think they have long expiry dates)
Also, Rotarix is live...alarm bells sound...

I know we’re not chemists but I wanted to ask for opinions on a reasonable way to proceed.

Realise it’s my choice, just a bit fizzy about it all and so reaching out to MNs!

Thanks in advance Smile

Honestly if the vaccinations weren’t stored correctly or the fridge completely failed they would never, ever give them out. It’s basic practice. I wouldn’t worry in the slightest.

I would expect that a new batch has been ordered and you were told to ask reception as they would know if the new ones had arrived.
No harm in asking for clarification before he has them through

Go to another surgery? Call them and explain and I'm sure they'll see you as they'll just want LOto have the jabs.

I wouldn't worry in the least, OP.
DH is a GP and his practice is his own, shared with one other partner. I worked with DH for many years and one of the things I had to be on top of was vaccination storage.
Yes, DH has had fridge problems. Believe me, they dump the vaccines even if they think there might be only the slightest, remotest chance of damage on account of improper storage. There is no room for risk here. Risk is not something NHS surgeries take.
Safe storage of vaccines in a GP practice is, to put it simply, of HUGE importance. I cannot emphasize this enough.
You've heard it from the horse's mouth that everything is ok.

This could mean that the vaccine you're after was in a fridge that was not affected (there's more than one fridge, probably). It could mean that they got in a whole new batch this morning to replace the damaged batch. It could mean that the vaccines were unharmed by the short-term fridge problem. Whatever. What they are telling you is that they have perfectly suitable, undamaged vaccines ready to give to patients at the present moment. Trust their word. They would not drop the ball on something this huge. There are too many checks and balances in place for them to screw up on something like this.

And above all, have a chat with the nurse handling the vaccines. He/she will tell you exactly how they managed that situation and put your mind at ease.

If ask them for specific details. As PP has said, they've probably ordered in a new batch and this is what they asked you to check for.

I can't imagine they'd even dream of giving little children potentialy compromised vaccines.
