Medela Steriliser bags

Apologies in advance for what could be the dullest thread ever but I need some advice please.
I have Milton cold water steriliser which im really pleased with, super easy.

However I'm having to pump regularly as baby won't latch. I'm washing my pump but all parts need to be fully dried before using again which is a bit of a faff with all the little parts. I was thinking of getting these microwave steriliser bags just for my pump bits but can anyone confirm for me please if the items would come out dry and ready to use?

Or any other suggestions for how to quickly dry my breast pump parts pls?

They're good bags but you have to put water in them so they don't come out dry I'm afraid!

If it helps, the advice I was given by the lactation consultant is to sterilise equipment once a day and just wash it in hot soapy water in between uses. Apparently as long as it's only breast milk you're using the bottles fot it's fine because it's got antibacterial properties. You could wash after pumping then leave it all to dry for the next time.

Ah thank you for clarifying Rogue, good to know!

It's just drying all the fiddly bits that takes the time but it says the performance of the pump can be impacted if not completely dry. Trying to pump every 2/3 hours so I'm washing immediately and leaving to drip dry but it's not dry by time I need it again.

Hopefully baby will latch soon enough and all
this pumping will be unnecessary!

I know the feeling, my DS wouldn't latch properly for weeks. The cycle of pumping, feeding, winding, repeat feels relentless, doesn't it?

Could you buy a couple more bottles / flanges etc so you're not constantly washing the same set and there's more time for them to dry? Most pumps have extras for sale on Amazon.

I hope it gets easier for you soon Flowers

I used to just put the pump in the fridge in between pumping sessions and wash and sterilise once a day. I figured it's no different to putting the expressed milk in the fridge...?

Which pump do you have OP? I'd assume only a small part of it is actually open to the motor so it's only that bit that needs to be dry really.

Thanks Rogue - I will look into spare parts, I didn't even think of that (sleep deprivation!).
I'm continuing to persevere with him latching, it'd made such a difference. Although being able to hand over the night shift to DH while he's on paternity leave is quite nice!

Spam - I've got the lansinoh double electric pump. That's a very good point. I might be getting myself into a tizz for no reason.

I never dry the pump pieces! They usually get used straight from the Milton bucket. I pump twice or three times daily and never had an issue.

BunloafAndCrumpets · 12/05/2018 09:17

Adding to the others saying you only need to sterilise the pump once every 24h. Hv told me that and it revolutionised things for me! She said to keep the pump in a sandwich bag in the fridge in between uses.

I also had a couple of spare medela pump sets. Useful to have too if the valve breaks or a bit gets lost, if you're dependent on it.

Hope all goes well for you. Smile

Thank you throw and bunloaf

I'm perhaps being a bit over zealous with the sterilising then, will give it a rest and have less drying to worry about!

How old is your little one? Have you tried nipple shields?

MrsRonBurgundy · 12/05/2018 19:24

Hi spam88

He's only a week old. Have some nipple shields on order to give him a try with ASAP - should be here tomorrow. Fingers crossed that they will work!
