Baby has a tan?

We've been out enjoying the sun ☀️ lots recently & my 10 month old has caught an obvious tan. She's quite olive skinned anyway, but I've been putting factor 50 on religiously, on her head to because she won't keep a hat on.. she hasn't burnt at all but is it ok that she is tanning? Am I exposing her to too much sun? Thanks...

Tanning is a sign of sun damage.

I can't stop my DS tanning. He's mixed already and people stop believing he's my child after a few weeks of sunshine he gets so dark. I use LS tops, hats etc and try to avoid him being in the direct sun more than 20 mins a day etc but then he's at nursery and he tans running around the playground.

If she's not burning and you're keeping her out of the direct sun, it's fine. Some skin types just tan easily.

Mankind has survived this far without slapping factor 50 on at the first whiff of summer. Some sunlight is good for her.

I remember DS on holiday as a baby - he sat in the shade with factor 50 on and a sun suit. He tanned more than me.

Short of sitting indoors I’m not sure what else we could have done.

Tanning is a sign of sun damage.

Do you have any words of wisdom other than that unhelpful comment?

WhiskeyStone · 10/05/2018 16:36

You're using sun cream, she isn't burnt and she is olive skinned so has a predisposition to tan. What's the issue?

mumlife101 · 10/05/2018 16:44

@whiskeystone actually I didn't think I had one, at all. That's until another mum complained she had put sun cream on her baby & he'd still tanned... she was angry about it & said she was buying another sun cream because it was rubbish. So I thought, maybe, it was damaging to their skin?

You need to be looking for the uvb and uva numbers. Sun cream can be factor 50 but only 1 star uva. The cheaper sun creams like Lidl seem to have more stars than the more expensive brands.
My kids tan really easily too but as long as I’m using factor 50 with a high star factor I can’t do much more.

mumlife101 · 10/05/2018 19:36

@afreerangeperson I just checked her suncream & it is only 1 star (had no idea about this) will look for one with a higher rating... many thanks for the info!!

Boots soltan kids range have UVA 5 star rating. I bought some today and just went to check when I read this thread! I also use la Roche Posay on my little sensitive skinned man which also has high uva protection. He doesn't react to the boots one and it's about a quarter of the price!
