Rooting! Help!

Argh so frustrated! DS is 5 weeks old and has been fed breast milk from a bottle since week 2 as he failed to gain weight BF'ing.
He is absolutely fine now - gaining weight and usually takes his bottle great but this past couple of days feeding has taken ages and he is getting extra gassy as all he does is root! Even if the teat is in his mouth he is flapping his arms not latching and just rooting. I haven't changed bottles, teats, nothing. Is there anyway I can stop this behaviour? It seems to frustrate him. I have tried swirling the teat in his mouth so he knows it's there and also angling it up to the roof of his mouth...any other ideas?

Nothing helpful but are you sure it's not teething? Mine can do this to my boob when she wants to bite. It's very young and they don't understand what biting is so takes a while to get the hang of. Is there a lot of saliva?

MumApr18 · 09/05/2018 22:29

Oh maybe!! Could he be starting to teeth at 5 weeks?

My dd was teething at 3wks n had a full set by the time she was 13mths, four coming at the same time was a revelation, he'll feed soon enough, try not to worry x

Does he need help getting the wind out? so bicycle legs and massage? My ds did at that age. Does he bring any wind or sick up? Are you feeding him at a 45 degree angle. Even the smallest teat would overwhelm my 8lb10 ds so i had to make sure he was upright so didnt choke.

Does he need a faster teat?

Benandhollysmum · 10/05/2018 01:00

Could be the teat itself. Try a new teat

MumApr18 · 10/05/2018 15:40

Yeah he does get quite windy if I don't burp him properly. We are doing paced feeding so he's fed upright most of the time anyway but his flailing is making it difficult!
I tried the number 2 teat this morning and he just choked and spat most of it out :(
I'm feeding him breast milk directly from the fridge. Maybe I should heat it up?

Heat it up cold milk always gives me and 3yo ds stomach ache.

How are you getting wind up.? Sat on kness rubbing back wasnt as affective as leaning him forward and twisting his body ever so slight. I'd do the legs thing intermittently throughout the day.
