Baby throwing food around!

Hi all,

My LO seems to take LOADS of food in when we spoon feed him but more recently we've been trying to get him to feed himself.

Things like toast, sandwiches etc. He seems to eat a TINY amount then play with the rest or throw it across the room. Is this just what babies do? 😂. Can I get him to eat more on his own? 🙈

How old is he?

foodgloriousfood1 · 09/05/2018 12:20

10 months. I'm sure this is perfectly normal behaviour, I'm just unsure how to get him to eat more without me having to feed him

Let him play with it.

It's all new to him. What looks like a mess is exploration. Leads to a less fussy eater. It does get better

Will he still be taking enough in?

He's still being spoon fed two meals, but we are letting him do it himself once a day.

He also still has milk in between meals.

Does this sound ok?

  1. Completely and utterly normal
  2. If he's hungry more will make its way to his mouth
  3. resist the urge to chastise, wipe mouth every 20 seconds and keep cleaning round him: an anxiety at this stage will likely make for an anxious and fussy toddler.
  4. Top up with milk and spoon feeding if you are worried but offer a meal of finger food (and a long opportunity to play/nibble/test it out) first.
  5. Try sitting down beside him and eating a similar meal ( a snack for you) so he can follow your example.
  6. Take pictures: you'll never get this stage back!

Oh believe me, I have enough pictures to fill 100 albums 😂😍

Relax. He knows how much he needs to eat better than you do. This is exploration and valuable sensory play for him. If he needs more he'll eat more.

Yeah, sorry all three of mine have done it, totally normal. My youngest is definitely the worst for it though, often throws it all on the floor before eating any. He's 16 months now and still doing it. I have learnt that if I pick it up and give it back he'll usually eat some, and if he's thirsty he's much worse for it. F I've forgotten to give him his water we've got no chance.

aladyofindeterminateage · 09/05/2018 12:50

Ah he's only little.
Give him a piece of toast in each hand and some grated cheese or a few peas in front of him while you shovel in the main meal.
Best of both worlds.

He is a bit too young to feed himself efficiently.

I give a little at a time and don't allow/encourage throwing.

I'm so glad you posted! My son does EXACTLY the same and he's 1 now! He's getting a little better but anything new or in particular wet, he just pushes around or throws!

Nice to know it's normal.

penguinpurple · 10/05/2018 18:26

For some reason mine chucks it all on the floor. Gets ratty and wants to get down then scoots round trying to eat all the food he previously rejected from the floor 🙄
