doing without nappies???

I'm about to have my first baby and am getting lots of advice on the whole disposable nappy/washable nappy debate. I grew up in Africa, where most mums don't use nappies at all, but I don't have an experienced mum handy to consult on how this works in practice. (Certainly you never saw mums at home coverd in poo!) Is there anyone out there who knows how you manage, or is it impossible in Britain to do without nappies of some kind, maybe because of the climate?

THank you, Ill start giving it a go, using your advice. Ive noticed that DD learns "backwards" i.e shell see or notice something for a while without realising what it is, then everything will suddenly "click" and shell get it, as though her brain had been slowly putting the pieces together. After seeing her do this with other things, I`m sure that it is going to work with her potty too.

Sakura Let us know how things go

Well basically so far its been kind of fun.
Ive let her go bare-bottomed whenever Im in the flat, usually all morning. Its true that she never pees in the sling. It must be the positioning of her body.
This morning on the toilet, I caught her wee and made the psss sound. My husband heard her weeing and we both got really excited, so she started laughing (positive reinforcement).
Ill be honest, I dont notice any signs before she pees, so shes obviously stopped trying to communicate that. There hasnt been a poo since Friday (still BF) so shes due one soon. AS soon as I notice some progress, Ill post it on here. I read on some website that 8-12 months is another "window" of opportunity for this. SO Im just going to wait and see. Ive found that I like doing this because there is no pressure for us to succeed.

I will be so interested to know how you get on, sakura! My baby is 'due' on Thursday (although I am not holding my breath!) and I will try holding her/him over a potty and going psssss as soon as possible; we will see what happens

hun, don't worry it can all be saved, there i a uk ec group tracey from www.babyarmadillo.co.uk runs it just let her know you want to join. and their is a ec for late starters we only started ds at 6 months but he is doing sooo well. in underpants for the last week at nearly 2 1/2 but lots of ec babies are in 'underpants' lots earlier than that.
