Swimming lessons- Goggles scaring baby during lessons

Hi,

We are doing swimming lessons and it’s going ok. Apart from when I wear swimming goggles. She just bursts into tears. I’ve tried clear/white goggles and black goggles and a pair from the swimming teacher. It all ends in tears. Does anyone have any secrets to this conundrum?

Don't wear goggles?

Doyoumind · 03/05/2018 21:18

Why do you need to wear goggles?

If you insist, start wearing them round the house so the baby realises it's you.

BarryTheKestrel · 03/05/2018 21:19

Don't wear goggles. It's a baby swimming lesson, there really can't be any need for you to wear them surely?

Do you need to wear goggles for baby swimming lessons, if they’re prescription could you just wear your glasses? I can’t imagine your head needs to go under too often.

NerrSnerr · 03/05/2018 21:21

Ah they can’t be prescription if you’ve borrowed some, then I agree with pp, just don’t wear them.

fluffiphlox · 03/05/2018 21:21

Why the blithering crikey are you wearing goggles for baby swimming?

ScaredPAD · 03/05/2018 21:21

Id go to a parent abd baby fun session (ours was like a pool toddler group!) Or just get them used to the pool yourself. Don't wear goggles!! Just play :)

AppleKatie · 03/05/2018 21:22

🤣 this is hilarious. Don’t wear goggles OP and I’m astonished that the swim teacher even had a spare pair to lend you.

EduCated · 03/05/2018 21:24

If you do need to wear them, start by wearing them round your forehead and gradually lower them maybe?

BackforGood · 03/05/2018 21:32

Another one who is a bit confused. Doesn't the parent just stand about and hold the baby in these 'baby swimming lessons' ? Why would you need goggles?

Sweetpotatoaddict · 03/05/2018 21:37

I get you op, i’m guessing you’re doing baby classes such as turtle tots or water babies. Try wearing the goggles at home, and try clear biggish goggles. If it’s an issue just try without them, funny faces and you being completely relaxed in the classes will also help. What age is your baby?

Laineywondermum7 · 03/05/2018 21:54

Goggles are needed for when you do under water parts. Yes I’m aware that some may not agree with going under water with a baby, the ethos regarding the unde water parts are to help with water confidence, but that’s another debate for another time. I’m after tips and advice not judgement or arguments please. Thanks.

It's possible to do under water without goggles though.

NerrSnerr · 03/05/2018 21:59

Can you just do the underwater bits without the goggles? The baby won't be wearing them so you'll be able to see what they can see under the water.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 03/05/2018 22:02

I do (and have almost always done) the under water parts of my ds's swimming lessons without goggles. Yes, they would be helpful but I never remember mine and really aren't essential. What do you need them for? We do parent and baby under water glide swims etc without goggles as do most of the parents in ds's class.

BUT ds had a problem with going under water until we got him goggles and we got him used to those by practicing loads in the bath. We also taught him blowing bubbles under water (for breath control), kicking etc at bath time. So, sounds slightly crazy, but I suggest that you wear goggles at bath time. We have reinforced loads of ds's swimming lessons this way and it has always worked!

Thishatisnotmine · 03/05/2018 22:04

If its underwater I am with you OP. I have never been able to open my eyes under water. They just won't budge! Get somr glasses to wear around the house, progress to goggles. Dd2 freaked out when mum took off her glasses once, proper screaming. Babies don't like change.

Laineywondermum7 · 03/05/2018 23:00

Sadly I can’t open my eyes underwater. On the odd occasion that I have I can’t see a thing. It’s not a case of seeing why she see’s it’s being able to do the underwater bits correctly. Without seeing what I’m doing it’s hard to do what I’m shown. I’ll try the tips of wearing goggles around the house and at bath time. I wear glasses so to me it’s odd that she freaks out with goggles. My glasses are purple plastic rimmed ones. Thanks for your suggestions and taking the time to comment it is very much appreciated. XX 😀
