Bunk bed for 4 year old?

Anyone else think these aren't suitable for 4 year olds? I've seen the most adorable bed that my DD has fallen in love with and which I woudl love to buy her - but I can't see it as anything other than dangerous. it's not a traditional bunk bed as there's no bed on the bottom, so she would be sleeping at the height of a top bunk. She's never once fallen out of her own bed and I suppose you could put a guard rail on it, but I still can't see it's safe.
I'm almost definitely not going to buy it but I wondered if everyone else here thinks I'm being over-cautious?

I think it is unsafe for a 4yr old, I think the minimum age recommendation is 6, but I could be wrong.

by DS got a raised bed at this age. It has slanted steps with a rail up (rather than a ladder) and it comes with a rail as part of it IFYKWIM. Tis lovely.

Furniture shops have to tell you that it is not recommened to put a child under 6 in a raised bed , not even cabin height.
the risk is more to do with climbing up and down , they may lose their footing and get a limb caught in the ladder /steps.
i do not mean to be alarmist, but I worked selling them for 7yrs and we had to stress it to every customer!

Can you do a link to the bed?

We've just bought one for my dd's 7th birthday and tbh our 4 year old is much more confident climbing up and down than she is!

but she's not having one yet - it's difficult to do night time kisses and hugs when they are 6 ft up!

Tinkjon · 15/05/2007 17:49

Thanks, everyone! This one has a slide down from it and I suppose it's just asking for trouble, as she'd be sliding up and down all night instead of sleeping

We've had bunk beds since the dds were 4 and 2.5. We haven't let them sleep up top til they were 4. It depends on your child really. Mine are absolutely forbidden to bounce on or jump off the top bunk and they stick to this. They know we'll take down the bunks if they don't.

I don't see that it's particularly more dangerous than letting them play on a climbing frame, which we also do.

and bunk beds are such fun

Lucycat · 15/05/2007 17:54

oh it's lovely!

my dd would love it too, I'd never get her to stay in bed though lol

is she competent physically?

Tinkjon · 15/05/2007 17:56

She's not very brave physically, so I think she'd be too scared to climb out! Also - and I can't believe I'm jinxing it by saying this! - she has never once climbed out of bed by herself, she always waits for us to get her up in the morning. So she'd probably stay put all night but I'd be a nervous wreck just in case it was the one time she decided to try and get up.

can you take her to mfi and see how she feels about it? they may well have one up in store.

or would she desperately want it if you showed it to her?

My dd on the other hand would be sliding down the slide until about 9pm if she could!

Tinkjon · 15/05/2007 18:07

She saw it in the showroom - we'd gone to look at kitchens but she saw this bed and spent half an hour climbing up and sliding down it!

As far as I can see the height is 1185 mm, so it's one of those mid-sleepers, isn't it?

Dd1 has been in one of those beds since she was 3.4. There's never been a problem.

magicfarawaytree · 15/05/2007 20:45

we put dd 4 in one and ds 3 on the botton at the time. I was worried as they are both climbers. dd has fallen out once, but was not hurt but apart from that no problems. dd and ds both get up during the night and are often disorientated so i was a bit worried at first. we dont let them play in the room during the day tho and especially not with friends, if they do sneak up with friends they are all on the top bunk so that is the only time it is a bit of a nightmare.

magicfarawaytree · 15/05/2007 20:47

she fell of the ladder, think she was a sleep walking. have found her asleep in the strangest positions, standing up propped against our bed having fallen out etc.
