Birthday on a school day, daddy away - how do I make it special?

My dd will be 5 soon, however her bithday falls on a school day - though she finishes at lunchtime that day. Her dad will be abroad on business for a week and her birthday party for various reasons will not be for another few weeks. Her main present is likely to arrive either a bit before or a bit after the day and is too big to hide once it's here!!!

Any ideas on how to make the actual day special for her - do you have any birthday rituals/ ideas?

Are you sure you can't hide her present, could a neighbour not keep it for you and bring it round once she is in bed.
Otherwise get her lots of little presents (colouring books, crayons, etc) for her to open on the morning - maybe make her breakfast in bed. Let her wear a 'I am 5' badge to school and she could take in some treats for her to share with her friends at school. Could you arrange for her to have some flowers sent to her from her daddy to arrive in the afternoon then take her out somewhere nice (maybe with her best friend too) for her tea.

How about a nice little tea party after school 0 with a special friend, or grandparent or even just the two of you. Have it as a picnic outside or even on floor in lounge - and invite her teddies/dolls along if she is into that type of thing. Save some small pressies for this time. Have a lovely cake with candles, and her favourite food.

And can you arrange for her to talk to daddy that evening? I do like the flower idea as well!

How about you and daddy getting mobile videophones (my brother got a pay as you go one last week in Superdrug for £30!) Then she could see Daddy on her birthday! Failing that do you have a video camera, he could record her a special message.

Ooh, I love birthdays! Here are some of the things we've done for ours, to start you off:

  • Make a chain of 'I am 5' balloons and hang it round her bed while she's asleep. Or a banner. Or tinsel, or fairy lights.
  • Cards/present opening session in parents' bed.
  • The child gets to choose a special cereal for the birthday breakfast (before the actual day, obviously)
  • We all sit down to proper breakfast with croissants and hot chocolate, and light a candle or two on the table. *Child gets to choose special supper (pancakes are a favourite with mine, specially with cream and chocolate sauce).
  • Maybe invite a friend or two round for tea after school -- easier than a proper party, and more personal somehow.
  • Take a funpack of sweets into school so the child can hand them out to classmates (depends on policy at the school, though).
