Getting baby to sleep

This may be a ridiculous question, but how do you get your baby to sleep on a night?

I don't mean how to you get them to sleep through, I literally mean at bedtime, what do yoh do?

Do you feed them to sleep? Rub their backs? Leave them in the cot?

What's your routine?

Mine is 9 months old

Do you play music? Do you have the room completely dark? Etc etc etc

My DD is 11 months so slightly older but she goes down awake. We have a myhummy too. We used to feed to sleep but were told by HV to try and put her down awake. Took a week or so and had to sit with her with my hand on her chest but it worked. Room has a black out blind but isn't completely dark.

Hi,
I have a set routine for my 6 month old -
5.50 - run bath and let him kick around without his nappy (LOVES this)
6 - bath
6.10 - out, dry, sing songs and give him baby leg massage (learned how from YouTube, it gets lots of smiles!)
6.20 - read story in baby's room (he mostly just wants to eat the book but I want this to be a key bedtime thing for years to come)
6.30 - nurse, turning off lights half way through and putting him in sleepbag (otherwise he could fall asleep nursing)
7 - in bed awake

He usually gets himself off to sleep within 10 mins but if he's a bit hyper, I stand by his cot and sing a few songs until he calms down and gets a bit drowsy, then just give him a kiss and he'll go to sleep himself. It took about 2 weeks for him to learn to get himself to sleep but I was warned by other mums to just stick with it and it would eventually stick.

We got a blackout blind for his room as well which I think is a big help but we leave on the nightlight. He knows when we put on the nightlight that it's sleepy time.

I think that routine is the main thing and probably doesn't matter what you do as long as it's the same thing at roughly the same time every day.

Best of luck!

I've always put ds down and left him to settle himself to sleep.

I change his nappy and clothing , give him his bottle then put him in his cot. I rub his chest until he's asleep.

He's six months old.

We previously had a big bedtime routine involving a bath , some singing etc but it was all just too distracting so it took him ages to fall asleep.

4 month old.

5pm-5.15pm - awake from last nap (always taken in sling!)

5.30pm - bath. Playing naked on changing mat etc. Pyjamas on.

6pm - feed in darkened room during which he gets drowsy but I don't let him sleep by burping him etc

6.30pm - read a story to him in bouncer. Put in sleeping bag. Hover in and out of room talking quietly to him. After a few minutes I switch music on and close blackout blinds. If he protests I rub his tummy and shsh him. He is usually asleep by 7pm.

I think a lot of it is making sure he us tired enough to sleep but not so overtired that he is fractious. ... not easy! I fed to sleep until a few weeks ago and he adapted quite quickly to new routine

I put my son down and he self settles himself to sleep
