Terry nappies

Any other mums using terry nappies? I have a 3.5yo who his nowhere near dry despite trying the potty, he's still in disposable nappies at the mo but they cost a fortune and I have a chance to buy 24 unused terry squares, pins, pants etc at a bargain price.

I'd really like to try the terries (they are 2nd hand but unused) and they are cheap. Are they likely to be ok on a slim 3.5yo, will I need to use 2 ?

Thx xx

I’ve not used terrys but I have used washable. I’d get them if they are really cheap. Chances are once he realises that it’s terrys or pants, he’ll chose to potty train anyway as he won’t like the wet feeling if he’s used to the disposables.

I bought the lot ready to use with newborn- never did in the end Shock too bulky and now too used to disposables.

Selling the lot on ebay apart from the terry towels which are useful for nappy changes, sick and dribble. [big grin]

Now I'm used to disposables, I cant believe I thought I was gonna do terrys- all that extra work- washing etc.

Same as ruby - DC1 was born in 2014 and my own mum had championed terries from when I was a baby, so I was keen to try them. Bought them, couldn’t keep up with washing them, they were bulky, and ended up giving up after about 3 days. A midwife visiting me commented she hasn’t seen a baby in one for years!

Lots of my friends have used other kinds of washable nappies though. Our terries themselves have had lives as towels, breastmilk soaker-uppers, baby changing mats and cloths. They wash brilliantly and look nice flapping in the breeze outside, but never fulfilled their poopy destiny.

I can try one on my 3.5 yo tomorrow and report back to see the fit? I think they would be big enough.

Not sure if it’s relevant but we only recently trained - went cold turkey, he was dry within a few days. He’s still in a pull-up at night but totally dry during the day.

Unless he is very big indeed, they will fit. We have had 5 children in them at night at that age and had no problems with fitting. I would advise you to use two - at that age a kite folded one padded with a second one - if he is going all night in them. If he is very big you can fold by placing the open nappy on the bed (or wherever you put his nappy on) and then fold down the edge which is to go under his back and round his tummy. How much you fold it will depend a bit on how tall he is but as a general rule I would say about start with about 7-8cm. You then just fold the sides so that you have a triangular shape with the point of the triangle on the opposite edge from the previously folded one. You then place the second soaker nappy, folded in half, in the middle of the first one. The child goes onto the nappies, you pull up the triangular front, with the soaker pad inside it, fold the sides round and pin or nippa it. I could not get on with nippas at first but now use them and wonder why I did not do so long ago. Oh - do make sure the nappies are tucked into the pants or wraps otherwise wetness will wick out onto the bedding. We used one bigger terry at night when the children were older but DS1 wore ordinary 60cm terries until we discovered the bigger ones when he was about 5. Good luck. (When I got used to doing it I, would fold the nappies into the form I was going to use as I took them in from the line or out of the dryer and before I put them away.)

Sorry - I don't think I read your OP properly. The advice I gave related to night time only but we have also had children in nappies in the day at this age without any problems. The fold I mentioned is good for night time because it puts bulk at the sides and front and is big enough for a booster nappy but less good for the day for the same reasons. In the day I tended to use a "neat fold" for our boys for as long as possible then just a pad fold inside trainer pants when they needed boosting. PM me if I can help at all more.
