Breast Milk Sharing on ITV's This Morning

Hiya

Did anyone see the segment about Milk sharing on the internet this morning?I am going to firmly put myself in the I think it's an amazing idea that mum's are willing to pump and share their milk to those who cannot BF/ or having some problems with supply. Although Milk Spots are amazing too if anyone has been to one.

I am assuming that the women who donate may be donating already to neonatal units and are therefore screened - although I guess some are not. However, there is obviously a demand for breast milk sharing. Furthermore, it got me thinking about why we can buy formula milk but we are unable to buy pasteurised breast milk?

I am assuming there are women out there like me who would be happy to donate for free if something was being run non for profit ( to just cover testing/ process/ delivery costs)? I am also assuming that some mums would be happy to buy ( I know I would have when my DD was struggling with milk intolerance in my breast milk). I just wish we had the choice.

Does anyone know firstly how they test the milk at milk banks, if it done by a machine etc. I am surprised we don't already have something set up in the UK . I also wonder what happens to any excess milk in the neonatal units, if there is any?

Pondering on this one.... anyone else?

There are milk banks in th UK. They use blood bikes to transport it in emergencies. They screen the mothers for contractable diseases via blood tests and they test the milk for bacteria levels. Having said that the banks aren’t regulated...
