Working Tax Credits help!

If anyone could please help that would be great.

Tax year April 16 - April 17 I wasn't eligible for working tax credit as I earned £30k. Had my baby in July and have been on maternity and I go back to work next week full time.

Last tax year I only earned approx £16k due to maternity etc. From what I understand when I return to work I can claim working tax credits. What I am confused about is at what point will I not be eligible and when do I need to inform them of earnings increased? Is it next April when I've got details of this years earnings? I'm a single parent and only in receipt of child benefit currently as I own my own house etc.

Thanks
