Baby shuffles while cosleeping

We've been cosleeping with our 8mo, who would wake intermittently for night feeds, which had been fine until he started crawling. He started rolling onto his front (he can't roll back), shuffling into 90 degree positions, getting into all fours and pushing himself towards the headboard. He normally has his own light blanket but he started getting tangled up in it. He's stopped most of his night feeds too, maybe 1-2 a night now. I sleep lightly so I pull him back to the centre of the bed, untangle him and can check he's breathing if he's in his front. But I'm worried I might sleep through and he'll crawl off the bed. We haven't used gro bags recently because I read some advice that they shouldn't be used cosleeping.

We are considering moving him to his cot but I'm worried he'll bang his head against the wooden bars or get himself stuck sideways. We also have a pack n play travel cot with mesh walls so it's a bit softer, but if he wants a feed I struggle to get him in and out gently because I'm so short (same problem with the cut tbh). We also have a sleepyhead grande that we use for naps (he doesn't roll during naps) but I won't use it overnight if I can't supervise him.

Any advice on what is the best and safest option?

My DS went onto a double mattress on the floor at 12mo. It means I lie with him to BF to sleep and I can do that for any wake ups. We used a double because that's what we had, probably would've gone for a single to move onto his own bed if we'd been buying, but he makes full use of the double on his travels during the night! I have an 8 month old who I co-sleep with and have been doing since he was about 8 weeks old. He’s been in a gro-bag the entire time....I had no idea this wasn’t recommended? What is the risk?

Once he’d started to roll I pushed my double bed up against the wall and he sleeps on that side so he physically can’t fall off the bed

He shuffles all over the place at night - he’s a nightmare (but very cute) and I usually find him with his head on my pillow the next morning.

He always starts the night in his cot but after his wake-up he comes in with me. I also don’t like the thought of them hitting their heads so my son sleeps in a travel cot but I completely get your point about struggling to pick them up out of it. Thankfully my son pulls himself up to the standing position before wailing for me so it’s easy to get him out.

I understand your reservations about the sleepgrande type devices, it’s my belief the Lullavy Trust are not endorsing these as safe sleeping options anymore?

The idea above is a good one. When DS became too big for the cot at about 2.5 years of age maybe, we put a single mattress on the floor for him to sleep on in his room as I was too panicked to go straight to a bed Grin

Queen I've coslept with both of mine and they've always been in grobags. Less clothing than if they'd been in a room on their own though probably. I then kept the duvet wrapped around me and just to my waist and arm between them and the corner of my pillow.

I think most cosleepers use sleeping bags?

It doesn't sound like you're getting much sleep yourself. It's fine to introduce the cot. My 9mo is all over his cot now, i find him in all sorts of positions when i check on him, and he seems to quite like sleeping on his side. He did get stuck sometimes but he's learned to use the bars as a sort of ladder to turn himself! Despite this, he has never banged his head to the point where he has hurt himself.

It won't be long at all until your baby can roll both ways if he's strong enough to get up on all fours.
