Why would you give your child unhealthy foods?

At easter my son tried some unhealthy foods for the first time I don't like it but i thought he had come to a good age for his first taste. He didn't really care for it and much preferred the healthy treats. Now im struggling to see why i would offer unhealthy foods ever again. But i would hate to see him become an adult and make bad food choices because he hadnt had any exposure to bad foods. Why would you give your child unhealthy foods? Ive been overthinking this for days

Because it’s not necessary to eat “healthy food” all the time to have a healthy diet.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 09/04/2018 22:27

Because they taste nice and nothing is unhealthy in moderation (unless you are feeding him arsenic).

Steeley113 · 09/04/2018 22:30

Because a balanced diet is much better then a restricted one? Plus, you won’t get a junk crazy teenager when they are finally allowed to choose their own food as it isn’t a mystery.

What do you mean by healthy foods? Balance is important.

And no good story started with salad.

Noqonterf · 09/04/2018 22:35

I think there is no harm in moderation.

FairiesVsPixies · 09/04/2018 22:37

May I ask how old your ds is?

Oly5 · 09/04/2018 22:38

Because a balanced diet includes treat foods which taste nice. How old is your son?
I can guarantee that when he goes to birthday parties he’ll want the crisps, jelly and birthday cake that the other kids are having.
My kids have treat food but also vast amounts of healthy food. They are not overweight and have good teeth so can’t see a problem

FusionChefGeoff · 09/04/2018 22:38

Because they taste nice and I want to share that experience with my kids.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/04/2018 22:40

You won’t be able to control your child’s food for very long unless you restrict their freedom

madeyemoodysmum · 09/04/2018 22:41

I had neighbours growing up that were not allowed junk.

On our birthdays every year. They literally spent the entire party sitting forging on the party food.

It was pretty gross.
I bit of naughtiness is fine imo.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 09/04/2018 22:45

So when offered “unhealthy” food (assuming Easter eggs??) he tried it, didn’t like it, continued to eat food you approve of? What is the problem here? You can make “unhealthy” food available to him from time to time without having to force him to like it

Because every child I know how has been forced to only eat healthy food will GORGE on 'unhealthy' food when allowed.

Also, I don't project food issues onto my children, they eat a balanced diet and I teach them that moderation is the key.

Unihorn · 09/04/2018 22:50

Because 90% of my diet is probably unhealthy so it would be hypocritical of me not to share...

Mellodrama · 09/04/2018 22:51

Ok, I'm intrigued as to what the 'unhealthy' food was that he ate? Hmm

Wolfiefan · 09/04/2018 22:52

Bad foods? Sounds like you have major issues around food yourself.

elQuintoConyo · 09/04/2018 22:52

'Healthy treats' like a brocoli stump or a pear or a carrot stick?

Fucking hell.

All things in moderation.

The godawful guilt i have around food is crippling and i wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Eminybob · 09/04/2018 22:53

Because we are all terrible parents and you are perfect, aparantley.

BertrandRussell · 09/04/2018 22:54

How old and what is the unhealthy food?

Mellodrama · 09/04/2018 22:54

Wolfiefan · 09/04/2018 22:54

At Easter.
It'll be chocolate. That or lard sandwiches on processed white bread. Hmm

Rapunzel. In the ladybird version it all happened because of the salad.

Mrscog · 09/04/2018 22:56

Because to be honest I don’t actually think it matters that much for kids as long as you promote healthy foods as well, and you monitor portion size carefully.
