Gro bag question

user1494270143 · 05/04/2018 20:27

I’ve recently put my 14 week old into a gro bag on a night, instead of blankets like I had done previously. Mainly because he wriggles a lot and I worry about blankets getting kicked about!!

He would usually wake once at about 3 for a feed then go straight bag down, but ever since I’ve been using a sleep bag he’s been waking every few hours. My room is about 18-20 and he’s in a 2.5 tog witty vest and slerpsuit so I think it’s the cold that’s awakening him.

But I’m worried about adding any more Layers as these are not the recommendations of the gro bag! Has any one had any similar experiences or advice?

I stopped using them with DS for similar reasons. He would try to move, feel his legs were covered, theen try to kick off the covers. When they wouldn't come off, he would wake. He's 2 now, and stll won't have his feet coveredto sleep, no matter how cold it is. He wo't even keep socks on. I just bought him some slippers, and a stach of fuzzy bed socks which go on the radiator,so in the morning he gets a pair of warm socks with slippers over to warm up his ice cold feet.

MANY typing errors in that! Sorry Blush

BloodyWorried · 05/04/2018 20:40

Check the guidance here as to what to wear in what temperature with which grobag: gro.co.uk/what-to-wear/ It’s probably too warm in a 2.5 with vest and sleepsuit, but trial and error what works for you.

When my dd was little she was in nappy, sleepsuit, 2.5 grow bag and depending on weather additional blankets, always at least 1. She hated the cold still does to be fair. There is no way she would have slept without the blankets. Do what you feel comfortable with but if you think the cold is waking then add a blanket

TinyPawz · 05/04/2018 20:48

For example, she has 2 13.5 tog quilts and homemade king size crochet blanket (folded in half so double layers. Best, jammies and socks. She will on very cold nights ask for extra fleece blanket. We live in Belfast so not exactly extreme cold but she cannot bear it at all.

Passthecake30 · 05/04/2018 20:51

When he was in the blankets was he tucked in nice and snug? Just wondering if he's missing that comfort.

Do his arms feel cold in the night? Stomach feel sweaty? Maybe he's hot/cold.

You could try a long sleeve vest under the babygrow if cold or instead of the baby grow if hot (with bare legs)

TheresALight · 05/04/2018 20:54

My 5 month old is currently in a 2.5 bag with just a sleepsuit, no vest. If we think its gong to get child in the night we put a cellular blanket over his legs

MynameisJune · 05/04/2018 20:55

My DD hated having her legs covered, still does. Gro bags never worked for us, but we had a JoJo snuggle suit that she wore from about 9 - 22 months when she moved to a duvet. Although she still kicks that off now.

Over the cold snap last month I'd put a long sleeve vest under DD's sleepsuit and fold over the integrated scratch mittens so her hands didn't get so cold. Then I'd pop a cellular blanket over her lower half if the temp dipped below 16 degrees, but the cold never woke her up in a 2.5 tog.

hereyougosuckmyassforensics · 05/04/2018 21:04

My boys have a 1.5 gro bag and a long sleeved best in 20c room, they sleep through most nights.

Shadowboy · 05/04/2018 21:07

My youngest is in a 20 degrees room in a 2.5 tog with vest, and a pyjama set. No socks. She sleeps through usually in that. When she was very little we used to cover her with a cellular blanket round her lower tummy and legs. She doesn’t like the cold.

GeminiWarrior · 05/04/2018 21:08

My dd is in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag and growsuit- a baby grow with padded arms. They are expensive (I got 2 for £16) but I would feel her arms are too cold with only a normal baby grow. Her room is between 20-16.5 degrees at night

flufffysockks · 05/04/2018 21:12

I dress my baby in

A long sleeve vest
Sleepsuit
Socks
Gro bag

On colder nights I give him a blanket

On warmer nights I might take off socks and vest

Depends on how warm/cold really!

DS1 has only just stopped using a Gro bag at 3. He was going to bed with the bag and then a duvet. It took getting a new bed to get him out of it.
DS2 is in Love to Swaddle bag with sleepsuit and short sleeve vest. He's been in a Gro bag a few times and he's slept the same.

Smurf123 · 06/04/2018 00:27

User interesting that you have noticed a difference.. I followed the instructions on the ground bag that day long sleeve vest for 18 degree room but I definitely thought my ds woke up more often and maybe he was cold.. He's only 4 weeks though so hard to tell as he doesn't really have a sleep routine as yet..
Also first time time and funding it difficult to decide what on earth to put him in and how many layers is enough / too many..

peanutbutter310 · 06/04/2018 08:08

I have always found that DD needs one more layer than recommended by the official gro company guidelines. Initially I was worried about 'breaking the rules', but checking her regularly this seemed to put her at the most comfortable temperature.

Just remember to check their chest or back, rather than hands, to get a real sense of how warm they are.

GummyGoddess · 06/04/2018 08:10

Are you sure they're not too hot? Dc likes his 0.75 tog bag, a sleepsuit and the air con turned up so his room is about 17 degrees! He won't sleep if it's about 18, but is a very warm child.

GummyGoddess · 06/04/2018 08:11

Just to add we didn't start off dressing him like that, we had the vest, socks and sleepsuit and bag on him with a room at about 19 or 20 before but he never slept well.

MonkeyPoke · 06/04/2018 08:14

4 month sleep regression?

purplemunkey · 06/04/2018 08:23

Yes, as other PPs have suggested I'd imagine he's too hot rather than cold. I used sleepbags til 18 months or so and don't think I ever used a sleepsuit AND a bag. She sometimes had a little sleep jacket thing over the top but nothing on her legs. I'd get very hot with pyjama bottoms on under a blanket at 18-20 degrees.

If you look at their guide they suggest he should just be in a long sleeve vest: gro.co.uk/what-to-wear/

I wouldn't add more layers. If you're worried about the sleepbags I'd go back to blankets.

It's natural to worry. I've only got the 1 DC so I'm a FTM at every stage. She's 3 and I still check her once or twice a night Smile

If you do stick with gro bags a good tip I got was to look for them in TKMaxx. They are at least half the price of what you'd pay in most other places.

FartnissEverbeans · 06/04/2018 10:32

When DS was little our room was 21 degrees and he worse a vest, sleepsuit and 1 tog grobag. Maybe your baby is a little bit too warm?
