DS(8) is regressing

He has always been much quite mature and independant for his age but over the last few months hes started to regress a little bit. I dont neccesarily think any of his behaviours are worrying for an 8 year old as obviously they progress at different rates and some of his 8 year old friends are still much more immature, its more that he was a super indepedant and mature 6 and 7 year old and is now going backwards.
He wants our help with almost everything or he at least he wants us to watch him when hes doing anything, His first proper sentances were 'worry bout self!' and 'go away!' so up untill now he would normally try and refuse any help from us. Before he used to sometimes sleep with 3 year old dd2 but usually thats when shes crying and can't get to sleep that he will come in to comfort or let her get in his bed but now hes doing it even when shes fast asleep already like he doesnt want to sleep on his own.
He wants a lot more cuddles, to be picked up and given a lot more praise and encouragement etc and just a lot more attention from everybody over all, he is maybe a bit more whiney and stroppy than usual but his actual behaviour isnt bad.

Whats going on and what should we be doing?
Is it we gave him too much independance to soon and he is realising he doesnt want to grow up and its fun being a little kid? Or is it even normal for kids to regress a little bit around this age?

Hes normally very good at talking about his feelings but hasnt suggested anything thats worrying him, as none of what he is doing is wrong we dont want to make him feel bad for it and like he has to stop or that there has to be something causing it but if theres something wrong we want to sort it out.
